Go with the snare stand. I always find that the toms on a rail sound a little more dead then if you put them on a snare stand.

Funny thing: when I put my vintage ludwig 13" tom on a snarestand, it suddenly sounds dead!!! and on the rail mount it sounds alive (but the rail system is not stable enough).

am I the only one??????

I would think it would resonate more on the rail mount as opposed to the snare stand? Thanks for all of the replies. I think I am going with a new rail consolette from Maxwell Drums in New York. I have the diamond holder already installed on my tom and will not have any extra holes on my bass drum.

Here's what I'd do:

Drill both drums for TAMA Rockstar DX mounts or better yet, one of those big ugly Yamaha Power V Special contraptions. Talk about stability! Classy AND affordable! Hmmmm

No one's going to win this snare stand/rail debate, just as your audience at a gig will never be able to tell the difference. You're discussing the subtle differences we hear as drummers striking batter heads from behind the set, but this is not what an audience hears. They're hearing predominantly the resonant heads. When tuning, I often have my wife (who has perfect pitch) play the set while I listen 15 feet away. It's a completely different sound out in front of the set as the resonant heads are contributing greatly to the overall sound. (and let's not even get into the acoustical factors of the wood stage or carpeting your sound is bouncing off).

Now if you're in the studio with mics on the batter heads, all bets are off as the sound engineer is going to make your pain-stakingly, fine-tuned drums with brand new heads sound any way he damn well pleases (just venting!)

Vent away, brother-man. We feel your pain...

Too many great drums to list here!

I think rail mounts were invented for trad grip. I had a set of Ludwigs and it didn't affect the sound that much, but I went for a cymbal stand/clamp since I can never get rail mounts were I want them. I don't really want to carry any extra stands either. Plus I had to loosen the rail mount, lay it down etc to pack. I think it must depend on where you sit. I sit high and with my kick aimed towards my right hand, so the rail mounts just don't do it for me. I was in your position. Repaired and covered a Rogers 20" and it looked so good virgin I just left it that way. Each to his own, that's for sure. Everything about the Maxwell looks good but for the price . . .

Here you go... the Maxwell consolette on my 66-67 kit. I think it looks great! I'm using this kit tomorrow for a gig. Should be fun!

Multi Clamps destroy your cymbal stands.. Use the snare stand option... (or better still), set it up with a 1" Gretsch Tom mount Bracket & Mount... These will hang off your Cymbal stand without the Clamp damage...& fit a RIMS..in between..

Cheers

Just wondering - how do you destroy a cymbal stand with a multi-clamp? Do you mean the ones with the screw clamp? I use these:

Never had a problem.

G'day Mate,

I just find the clamps both "screw" & "V type" bite into the chrome too much, and on occasion I have put some decent dents in the stands.. Particularly with the cantilever weight of a tom hanging off them. Whilst a Gretsch tom mount fits right around a 1" tube and looks much tidier..

Cheers
