Took a Punt on a Pioneer Last viewed: 5 seconds ago

I just bought this as it seemed reasonably priced and the Int shipping was fair too. The photos aren't great and there's none of the badge but I figured the heads and wires looked original so the rest of the drum should be OK. We'll see.

The strainer is not one i'm familiar with but I see it listed in the 1960 catalog at VDG. Is there a name for this strainer and why does it seem so uncommon? Was it not particularly good or something?

That looks lie the shell I just got from John. I will be interested in hearing what the experts have to say about this one.

Thank you!

Andrew- congrats!! that should be a great drum!

that strainer is called a large pioneer p85 of all things. they are seen on some trans badge drums and for some reason on a lot of 1960 drums. there is also another version of this that's a 2 hole mounting.

ive got a 60's trans badge pioneer with the same strainer..i think it was Ludwigs way of using up old spare parts and mixing things together. I just realized yours has the original heads. that's awesome!

Thanks Mike, I've never seen one before. The seller has sent me a photo of the trans badge so that's all good. So I assume the name "Large Pioneer P85" was thought up last thing on Friday as they were walking out the doorCool Dude

FFR - Yeah, when I first saw the strainer I figured the knob had been switched out so I dashed over to VDG before pulling the trigger. Gotta love this site.

$99? That's a good score Andrew. I'd like to have a Pioneer, but I've had 6 lug drums before, and I'm hopeless at tuning them. It's my fault, not the drum's.

Congratulations.

I've had 2 before but sold them for the same reason. But I'm keen to have another go and maybe use it for some selected recording. I was trying to explain to a guitar playing friend last night about how I quite like the sound of old Hofner arch top guitars. He couldn't get his head around this and figures they just sound dreadful. But sometimes it's horses for courses and some songs need a different sound. This song (a work in progress) uses an old 50s Hofner guitar and I think it's perfect for the song. The snare is a Premier 35 (Supra copy) but I reckon the Pioneer could work well here too.
