Top 10 Reasons why older guys are more likely to have vintage gear. Last viewed: 1 minute ago

Loading...

1-those drums imprinted on you when you were younger.

2-you are nostalgic for the era in which you began playing.

3-you can afford more expensive collectable gear.

4-you can't afford more expensive newer, quality gear.

5-you are nostalgic for the drums your hero's/idols played.

6-you didn't think there were any drums made after 1980, '77, '70, etc.

7-you love to tinker, and restoring drums combines 2 favorite hobbies.

8-you don't speak Japanese or chinese or korean

9-you believe that newer drums are not made as well or don't sound as good.

and finally...

10- vintage? whats vintage, I bought this new!

Which one are you? (or is there an 11,12, etc)

Years ago I was doing an airshow static display for the Army Reserves with a UH-1 at Dayton and I got a chance to climb into the cockpit of a B-25... I've climbed into a lot of airplanes, from Lear jets to 150's but I had never gotten a chance to sit down in a WW2 warbird and grab the yoke and throttles... so I pulled myself through the bomb bay and into the cabin... it was old... like climbing into a time machine. So I sat there, scanned the panel, then closed my hands on the controls. I thought about the journey that airplane might have taken to arrive at that point in time... and now I was a little part of the journey.

I got that same kind of feeling when I picked up my first set of beat to crap old Slingerland's at a yard sale and started bringing them back... what did they go through to get to that point.

I know it's corny... but it is what it is. These old drums got some soul.

Not a Guru... just interested..

I'm younger than kit I play. To me it's partially because of 60's 70's heroes but also:

12 - you can hear same kit as yours on hundreds of LP's...

13) They don't make this color anymore.

Although, Ludwig has re-released something similar....

A little bit of 3 and a little bit of 4. And also 14, they just look cooler than the new stuff (even the re-issues)

Most of the modern drums look to me like scientific structures from a lab, whereas the Vintage sets are more like beautiful sculptures from an Art gallery.

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
