Oh man...the stuff he did with Eddie Shu is fantastic, even with bad meatballs.

To this day I still can't figure out what the hell is going on from 0:57 to 0:59

http://youtu.be/r8gvJnhTY2s

I've had this kicking around for a little while as well.

It seems to be some kind of "Fanzine" put out by "The popular music editor of Swank magazine" (I know....right?)

I'll scan it one of these days. The thing is so damn fragile feeling I"m always afraid to turn the pages.

Actually, anyone have any tips on storing something like this so it doesn't disintegrate any further?

Here's a little of what the inside looks like:

I know the spotlights and shadows were one of Gene's trademarks, but this could be a still from the movie John's piece of wrap was it, which I believe was called "Beat the Band"

This is from "The Mirror" a Perth newspaper Sat 14th Aug 1954.

Any typo's will be mine.. I love the comment from Buddy...

YOU CAN MARK OFF 'K' FOR KRUPA DAY

August 25 will be marked down as K -Day on the calendars of many Perth's hot music lovers. That's the' night Gene Krupa and his trio are booked for Perth — a one-night stand at the Capitol. Date has to be confirmed as Gene only arrived in Australia on Friday,

but it is almost certain that this will be the night. Hot-eyed, engaging Gene has been hearing loud noises in his head since the age of 12. Most of these noises have emulated from his elaborate set-up of drums cymbals and such like.

Strangely enough, but for this drum set, Gene would have been in Australia days ago. His excess baggage amounts to 340 lb. It is a bit on the bulky side and not every plane can manage it. Sammy Sharp, organiser of the WA trip, has no fears of this upsetting his plans. Questioned yesterday, he said: "Have no fear, because Gene is definitely coming here." He said Eddie Shu and Teddy Napoleon, both world class musicians, have been booked with Gene. Krupa will arrive here by plane on August 24. Local musicians will be at the airport to play him in.

On the Wednesday he will be shown the sights of Perth. Concert will start at 7 p.m. because Gene must catch the night plane back to Melbourne for a concert the following day. Krupa fever has really seized Sydney, Six top dance-band drummers will provide a guard of honor at Mascot. When he steps off the plane they will "give him the drum." On six full sets, they will play the drummers' classic "Sing, Sing, Sing." They will drum him into all functions. Trocadero drummer, Bobby Bell said: "There is only one Krupa — and we are his prophets. He's dynamic, jungly, infra-atomic. He has the message. He made the drums what they are today, the heartbeat of jazz." Another referred to Krupa as the "Oliver Cromwell of Jazz." Adding: "When he's gone, none can touch him." Though he is 44, Gene has lost none of the fire which characterises his, drumming. His colossal showmanship also adds to the attraction.

Brooklyn-born Buddy Rich, who recently toured Melbourne and Sydney, with Artie Shaw and Co., after sending the crowded West Melbourne Stadium wild with his crazy rhythms, said: "Aw, It was nothing, If you think that was good, wait till Krupa comes. He's forgotten more about drumming than I'll ever know." This, coming from a world's top who, by the way, is not known to be afflicted with any false modesty, shows how good Krupa must be.

Hi Longjohn,

Interesting articles, Alf Holyoak was a friend of my dad. Both were sax players.

I got a kick out reading his name, thanks for posting man!

> I still can't figure out what the hell is going on from 0:57 to 0:59

Richie, it's a thing 'jazz' drummers use more than any other form of music.

The trick:

Hold the left hand stick against the snare head and use the right stick to tap on the left stick about 3/4 of the way down the stick. Experiment until you find the 'sweet-spot' on the left stick where the woody click sounds the best.

The rest is an alternation between the bass drum and the rhythm being played by the right stick against the left. Listen carefully, it's not a complicated pattern. Best to record it and using music editing software, slow it down until you can hear the rhythm in slow-motion. Not necessary really, if you listen carefully over and over.

Focus on the right stick first, get that pattern in your head. Next few passes, focus only on where he throws the bass drum in. He's alternating between the snare stick-clicks and the bass drum. With enough passes, you'll work it out. Not hard, but sounds great don't it?

In drum speak: taka-boom-taka,taka-boom-tak,ta,tak

(taka = two hits right hand. Accent the second note of each pair. Boom = bass drum hit. On the tak,ta,tak, play it like a triplet accenting the first and last note. Middle note soft. Dynamics baby! It's what separates the men from the boys... a 'good sounding drummer' from a so-so one.)

Hope this helps. I figured it out first pass. Trust me, if I can do it, -anybody- can do it!

Cooked Egg

Oh God, John, I feel like such a schmuck for having you type all that out!

But thank you!

DOH

I copped that particular "Jazz thing" years ago..but it's that, it's just the way Gene plays that little lick, I've been trying to duplicate it for years & always feel like I am coming up short a beat with the bass drum.

It's funny you mention the dynamics of it all....I totally agree.

You can't be a Krupa fan and not it rub off on you.

That seems to be my biggest gripe with drummers these days....I call them "The swing & bash" players.

There's no feel & it's all one volume...it's like "Sing, Sing, Sing" never happened for them.
