What a great thread. Thanks for posting the video clips and taking the time to write down those great memories John (and others!).

I've only recently gotten into Krupa (since joining this forum in '09 actually), but love his style and of course, the tone of his Slingys. When I was younger and just getting into drumming my grandfather would ask me if I knew who Gene Krupa was (and Buddy as well) and remark that they were the greatest drummers ever. I was too young to appreciate his comments, and it took me almost 20 years to finally sit down and really listen to those big band drummers. Its been like an epiphany. I wish I would have listened to my grandfather sooner.

Just as a side, Ive recently picked up a vinyl copy of "Krupa and Rich". For those that havent heard it, its a great record that really showcases each drumming ability..and boy do they have some chops. Definitely worth picking up on cd or record if you can find it.

Thanks again,

James

The thread "fired me up"...

Just dug through the old 78 collection... Boogie Blues & flip side\Opus No 1.

Hell, they still hold up... despite the scratches... and having to wind the handle..

Cheers
