Trying to find out what drum series this Ludwig is. Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Found this kit out on craigslist. Bought it anyway, just because the hardware alone was worth it. Had to take it apart and clean everything because it had been in a garage where cod webs, dust and spiders had been resting on it. Shells aren't out of round thankfully.

Looks to be a Late 70's / Early 80's Kit.

Config was 22" kick, 13" and 14" rack toms, 16" floor. Possible that the guy who had bought them before might have bought the 14" at a later time. But it does look like the same era. (Blue/Olive) Badges.

No reinforcement hoops. But the shell looks like it a 6 ply maple.

Finish is White cortex.

Any info would be great!!

P.S. Here's a pic of the 22" Bass Drum and 13" tom.

looks like you got it figured out.

ludwig b/o badged set standard depth. if they were rockers they would have had black and white badges. the sharp edged ones are earlier, look in the guide at the top of the forum.

and by the way awesome score, I really want to get a 70's to 80's Ludwig in deep sizes, I have a rocker but it's just not the same.

I like Drums...

Nice kit. I have the same shell pack in Silver Sparkle I bought new in 1980 after my 1970 Hollywood set was destroyed in a club fire. Nice African mahogany kit.

I see your's is wraped and the wrap seams glued.. Mine unfortunately have the rivets. Still nice 6 ply maple. Heavy drums. Mine reside in the recording studio. There actually great sounding drums. If ours are both 1980 kits I wonder why mine has rivets and your doesn't?

That was one of the dumb things that Ludwig did to hold the wrap on their drums. If i recall right Ludwig Stop useing the "Rivets" in very late 1980 but sets still showed up in 1981 they were new old stock ones. Why did Ludwig use rivets in the first place thats the question..I sure don't know. The problem was the wrap would pull the rivets out of the shells thats why Ludwig stop doing sets with them...Mikey

Hey AD, is the bass drum a 16x22? I have the same kit in natural maple. I bought it new in 1979, got a lot of complements over the years from soundmen on how great they sounded.

First, Thanks everyone for the replies! Mikey777 Thanks for the info.. I did a lot of narrowing down. Luckily, I only got the kit for a 250.00

As for the depth of the bass. it's a 14X22 rillow64.

It's coming along nicely. Doesn't have the original hoops. But I'm stripping the paint from these hoops and repainting them white. Although I was thinking about getting some old ludwig hoops and get white inlays. For right now, the white hoops would look good I think.. I'll be reheading them with coated heads anyway. Thoughts?

Got the kit finished and playable. Here some pics of it.

The hoops originally were black and NOT the factory hoops. So, I sanded down the hoops it came with and decided to paint them white. thinking it looks good.

Thoughts?

Wrong hoops but it looks killer! I sold a 6-ply kit to one of my buddy's here at the forum. Those drums are going to be some of the best sounding drums you ever played. I'm a huge fan of 6-ply luddies. Great drums.

Congrats on a good buy!

John

Too many great drums to list here!
