Forgive me if I state the obvious....

Your drum is good (76 Ludwig).

Your head combination is good. (PS3 coated/emporer)

As with anything, you need to fine tune. Try different tuning ranges, higher resonant, looser batter, etc. Experiment with different muffling. To shoot for a sound like you mentioned, the forum members are dead on. It would also help to have George Martin and a mess of Chandlers (sorry I had to go there).

Point is....try as many different combinations of tuning, muffling, beaters, etc. before you swap heads. And really try it. Play the drum at rehearsals or maybe a gig. I will say that a thinner resonant head may give you the sound...

When in doubt go with a....AQUARIAN SUPER KICK!

26" Ludwig.

Coated 2 ply all around.

Felt strip on both sides.

Solid resonant head (no port hole)

Tune resonant much higher than batter head.

That's actully what I have on my 22 60s Ludwig that I have set up (coincidentally, no front, with a foam pad shoved in there). It's dead, as expected, with tons of attack. I think you want some less attack than what that offers. that being said, I don't think you'll like the way it sounds from the players seat if you go with the suggested route (front head off), though in a recording, it does sit out there, but on its own, its really dead.

My goal is to make my 1981 Ludwig kit look original using Ludwig silver dots on the batters. And clear resonant on the bottoms.

Can i still get a good sound out of them?

That's too subjective of a question. My take - no. They would sound like crap. Someone else may enjoy that boingy plasticy drum sound. I don't. I like the round, full, warm sound of wood when I play a wood drum. So, again, too subjective of a question.

Jerry,

I think that's a good choice. I have that combo on my Rogers XP8 toms I use, and it sounds great. A coated reverse CS on the snare is nice too. It certainly depends on what you're playing, and is definitely subjective but worth a try.

I've seen too many bearing edges get chewed up, too many pieces of hardware lost, and a few shells gone out of round -- all from leaving the reso head off. Personally, if I was going for that sound, I'd probably use something like the Evans Retro Screen resonant head. Either that, or a reso head with a big ol' cutout. Either way, I'd want to keep my hoop and hardware installed to keep the drum's parts intact and to protect the bearing edge.
