tuning bass drum Last viewed: 2 minutes ago

From Stallwart

If this is for live gigs, go ahead with a resonant head and try miking the batter head..........don't bother oiling your pedal, Ringo's squeaked some.

Fortunately, we have Abbey Road-era "live" footage so that we can emulate the venerable Starkey. Called the Rooftop Concert. Ludwig maple Thermogloss 12-13-16-22 and a bath towel from Holiday Inn draped over the Supra. No reso head, horse blanket inside the drum. Looks like the mic is in the normal spot, though. Not close to the batter head.

How would a Ludwig silver dot sound on the kick?

I have a silver dot on my 1965 20" Club Date. One felt strip on the batter for muffling; repro 60s Ludwig logo head on the reso. The drum came with the silver

dot head when I bought it, and I figured it would need to be replaced -- but to my surprise, it sounds full, round, and open. I think you can get a nice, warm bass drum tone out of a silver dot, at least on a 3-ply 20" drum.

Kits:
1950s Gretsch Name Band in Midnight Blue Pearl (13/16/22/14sn)
1965/66 Ludwig Club Dates rewrapped in Black Diamond Pearl (12/15/20)

My new method for bass drum muffling is cheap and effective, not to mention more versatile than anything else I've tried.

I just use the adhesive-backed foam weatherstripping that comes in rolls. I got it at Home Depot for about $7 a roll. The stuff I use for my 36" kick is 1.5" wide. I have two rows of it, side by side, along the very edge of the head, on the inside of the drum, on the batter head. So, 3" total. The reso side gets just one row.

This stuff is great because it's easy to use "just enough" to get the sound I want, and it's cheap. I also like the fact that it accomplishes the same thing a Superkick does, while allowing me the versatility to use it on whatever type or brand of head I choose.

Just my $.02...

Ringo never used a Supra with the Beatles....it was his trusty Black Oyster Jazz Festival.

That is what the dead ringers were, a round strip of foam with adhesive on one side. I use to use it with a pinstripe batter. The foam would just touch the shell. One of the best kick sounds ever (imho)!

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Go with either that retro screen from Evans or a coated Ambassador in the reso side instead of the Emperor. I've found that thicker resonant heads sound wetter and have more sustain, which is NOT what you want here.

I have an early 60`s 22" 3 ply with an Evans EQ1 on batter side and an Attack "no overtones" on the res side. This drum has the twin mufflers on both heads (radio king style) I have both of them just touching the heads and nothing in the drum. This drum is a low tuned cannon that I really love the sound of it.
