Uber collectable kits. Last viewed: 1 hour ago

KK

I've seen a few set and snare here that were really the stuff to trade a left body part for.

The autograph of the stars kit, the bombers, and the top hat and cane kit are 2 good examples.

What would you guys consider the other ultra collectable kits and snares.

I think that one of a kind Billy Gladstone bronze snare would be there.

If you own one, post a pic please.

Although not so rare I assume, since Ludwig sold a ton of them, but can't get any more collectable than black oyster pearl mid 60s Ringo kit.

No, I don't own them and yes I would love to. Especially the downbeat sizes, 20/14/12 with matching Jazzfest snare. For about $1,000 (yeah right..). Or my other 3 drum kits, plus cash, 1 year personal nutrition and weight loss counseling by yours truly, and a player to be named later...

Don't know how uber-collectable it is, but you don't see one on the block everyday. It's a late 1920s Ludwig and Ludwig, with a few Leedy bits.

Mostly anything from the Curotto collection comes to my mind, especially his "sets" of snares.

Sadly, I do not own anything of that caliber.

I do have a matched pair of Rogers XP 10 Dyna-Sonic maple snare drums from 1983. A Rogers 6.5 x14 SuperTen maple drum that was built for Gina Schock of the Go-Go's and signed by her in 2012. A 1963 Rogers COB Dyna-Sonic #2811, the lowest numbered Beavertail lug drum that I have ever seen. A 1964-65 Rogers Powertone 5x14 in Wine Red Ripple with matching 1964 close numbered set (20-12-16) in above excellent condition.

If that don't come close to qualifying, ... I got nuthin.

Rogers Wildwood Dynasonic comes to mind as rare. Only know of 1-2 others. Together with the Powertone snare + set of Wildwood in the basement, it seems pretty hard to duplicate as a 5 piece.

Number one collectable kit for me all time would be Neal Peart's kit from his first time performing live with Rush. That show happened to be in Pittsburgh, and all in all, that would be the kit I would place as number one on my list. That kit represented the beginning of a forty+ year career and a better-than-most chance that anybody that was asked would mention him as the best of all time, at his discipline.

Number 2 is anything Stephen Adler played on, live.

I see collectable as something that was used by a successful drummer, to do something important in music. Not a randomly made kit that happened to be so unpopular, they only made a few of them at the time due to poor sales. Then fifty years later, they are only cool because there weren't that many of them made and everybody wants something nobody else has.........

That statement doesn't just fit with Drums, but with anything made for commercial reasons and then flopped. People collect all sorts of stuff, but the flops are tops for rarity and collectibility. For instance, the first thing that springs to mind while I type this is Delorean. Although made famous through Back To The Future, Delorean Cars are worth a fortune. They were dog****. But there you are.

I would agree as above = a Billy Gladstone kit would fit the "uber collectable kit's category.

This kit is currently owned by Carl Palmer and it is for sale at this time. The bd, floor & rack toms were built for Morey Feld ....the snare with this kit was built for Cozy Cole. There is a drum battle video with Gene Krupa and Cozy Cole where you can see Cole playing this snare drum.

Of the four kits Glastone built there are only two full sets surviving - this one and the one Chet Falzerano owns.

The last four paragraphs at the maxwelldrums.com link below details the history of the kit.
