You're in Portland which is a very health conscious progressive city. There are probably a plethora of natural health practitioners and/or chiropractors with trigger point muscle therapy experience. That's the route I would go. Good luck.

From thornbeck

Thanks for the update. Not knowing you or your health, I didn't want to jump straight to this and freak you out, but I'm posting this as a general awareness for everyone.TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack)http://www.strokeassociation.org/STROKEORG/AboutStroke/TypesofStroke/TIA/TIA-Transient-Ischemic-Attack_UCM_310942_Article.jspI just found it strange that, out of the blue, a drummer which has built up memory muscle and coordination over many years, suddenly loses that ability.Hope everything is improving for you.-Tim

Had one myself last October.

They come with a variety of symptoms depending on which part of the brain is being deprived of oxygen.

I had no idea what was going on....just slight dizziness and some weird visual stuff for about 5 minutes, and it went away. I blew it off, but as circumstance would have it I had my quarterly doctor's visit the following afternoon.

After telling my doctor of my symptoms, he scheduled the first MRI he could (turned out to be 6:30 AM the following morning ) to assess any damage.

Thankfully, there was none.

My doctor told me if it occurs again, be sure to tell the 911 operator I have a history of TIA and the ERT cats can administer "clot-busting" medicine opon their arrival.

It has saved many lives.

I've had some experience with tingling and loosing sensation in my bass drum foot--though not with the left leg--when using tractor type seats. I like to sit high but in these instances I dropped the height a bit and things returned to normal. Perhaps your set up needs a tweak. I hope it's that simple.

Eric - I wish you good health! Hope you get that sorted out. Pretty scary I know from experience. I have degenerated discs and one very serious one that put me out of commission a few years ago - very painful and left me with permanent paralysis in my right calf down into my foot into the ball of my foot. Pretty much did change the way I play a bass drum but it's fine for me. I've never been a 'John Bonham' - like bass drum player.....and never have played those complicated and fast rhythms on the bass so everything is working good for me.

Again - wishing you good health and hope it is not serious.

Eric hope things turn out ok. Scary indeed. Like others I have a VERY bad back and hands and legs go numb at will. Kinda a drag when trying to play for extended periods. I stopped playing for 30 years then started again. Very frustrating knowing how I used to play and having lost all my chops. My right bass foot has been the biggest pia. I used to sit kinda low and cradle the snare between my legs. I now sit higher to get more leverage for the bass pedal and it works pretty well. Anyway keep us posted on your situation. All the best!

Glenn.

Many great suggestions here Eric and all of them valid.I`ve had the numb bass pedal foot/leg before and still do from time to time having been playing 53 years with slamming the foot pedal against an immovebal object at high impact. When i do have this discomfort i`ll change the throne/drum stoll height either an inch higher or lower.Try experimenting with this as "an inch is a mile" in the game of drumming. Also how close or far you sit from the kit.Best wishes for many more years of happy drumming without any pain.

I'm hearing a lot of advise from our team of amateur doctors. Sorry, if they scared you. You're probably fine, don't worry. You'll know yourself if you need to see a physician, only you will know that. It's your body. I'd like to mention that I've had similar troubles executing doubles, triplets etc. with my kick pedal, but only during recording session. The trouble was I was over thinking it. I screwed up once and then every time I tried do it afterwards I screwed it up again and again because I was thinking too much. Just relax, have fun and get your head in the zone and you'll be OK. We can easily make a complete mess of the simplest things if we're over-thinking it. I do hope you're OK and you're back enjoying your drums soon.

Great comments all!

Chromeo, I'm pretty sure it was just that, over thinking my foot work combined with

just over doing it. Played Tuesday night with a big band and my leg/foot was responding as usual. Funny thing is I realized I don't really double very much anyway in jazz but when I used to play more funk/pop I doubled all the time. Part of my problem was/is probably just a mental lapse in what my current ability is compared to what I used to do.

I guess this might be one of the reasons why they invented the double kick pedal, never used one or a double bass though.

Am also starting to think I might need a new throne, been using the same Tama Titan throne since I started playing drums in middle school. I bet the foam is barely even foam anymore, though not terribly uncomfortable, a bad throne could mess with nerves/blood flow.

Great comments guys :)

Found it!!

My wife's a pharmacist, she says something like that can be due to low potassium or Vitamin B-12.

Eat more steak & bananas? :)

Eric - Try a throne like the Roc-N-Soc that has a -bicycle- style seat. Alleviates all the pressure under the thighs and frees your legs up. I got one 6 or 7 years ago and I haven't looked back. Most comfortable seat there is.

Freddie - you have to be careful about giving out medical advice to people. I'm a kidney patient, high potassium levels in the blood can be dangerous... it can stop your heart! High potassium levels landed me in an emergency room not very long ago. Potassium is one of the combination drugs they give in lethal injections. It's the part of the drug combination that is meant to stop the heart. Unless the OP knows he has low P levels, someone with normal levels could drive it up to dangerous levels with dietary changes alone. You should always have blood work done before altering your eating habits in any significant way. Just saying...

John

Too many great drums to list here!
