Vintage Ludwig snares....which do you prefer? Last viewed: 46 seconds ago

I'd have to say that my favorite is any 1920s NOB two piece shell. Current favorites are 5 x 14 8 lug and a great 4 x 15 6 lug which just has the fattest thump.... Love that drum!!

Great choices! I'd have to add 6.5 BB and Hammered Bronze...I like the idea of carrying my own snare...so yes!

I always took my own drums Always! who would ever have a set like my own and I am not spending a hour tuning their drums to my taste.... never did understand playing a house set...

The Supra is the more versatile drum. The Jazz Fest (which, as noted before, is a half-inch deeper) can match your kit.

So now I just need to buy a BDP kit to match my Jazz Fest....

It's been a while since I played a COB Supra, and I honestly don't recall it being [I]light years[I] beyond the Ludalloy. Certainly not to the point where I can't bear the shame of playing the "regular" version.

So, if it was a matter of picking which to buy with my own money, I'd go for the Ludalloy Supra. If it was any one for free, I'd pick the COB. If I owned all three and had to pick one to play, it would be the Jazz Fest. I prefer drier wood snares.

Here's a loose order of my favorites that I own, a different snare for a different fare.

1-Pre serial COB super

2-62 SBP Jazzfest

3-67 supra

4-65 WMP jazzfest

5-65 WMP pioneer

6-67 WMP super classic

7-70 Acrolite

Here's my two cents.

my 57' wfl 5.5 (heavy 3 ply, with fat cat snare wires) for rock. What a warm crack and solid tone!

my 70's supra (puresound wires) for outside projection and higher pitch crack, and for reggae (tuned up pretty tight.)

my 68' ludwig standard 5, basically a jazzfest I guess, (puresound wires) for ultra response and perfect tone. I love this for anything subtle, or with brushes or rods.

I'm still getting used to my jazz fest...haven't gigged it yet. I have gigged my 60s Acro which worked well in a blues rock setting...and I love that Al Jackson sound.
