Vintage Ludwig Suitcase Drumset! Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Yes, I'm calling this a vintage ludwig because all of the hardware, (except the hinge) is vintage Ludwig. That's a ludwig snare, Speed King pedal, and spare tom mounts from a Ludwig Standard.

I had fun with this project, I didn't just do it as a project but because I play with an acoustic folk/roots rock band and we play at a lot of street events and small rooms and it's necessary to get in and sometimes out fast, and it's often a long walk to set up.

Anyone else do a suitcase set?

I've jumped off that pier many times when it was big about 18yrs ago! Sweet little kit, and the SC Mystery Spot bumper sticker, cool man~

Half the pier is closed, due to needing work. Hope they can raise the funds to fix it!

The kit's great for jams, small stuff, and busking.

We were street busking in SLO one night, and Jon Anderson, of Yes, came by. sucked him into singing "Gloria" and "Wooly Bully" with us. That had to be a first for him. Told me he'd never played with someone playing a suitcase before!

Everything but the snare goes inside. The hardest part was finding hardware that'd fit inside. All I have to carry is the suitcase and a backpack snare case. The bigger suitcases didn't sound as good...

Ok Here are my pics.

And I do gig with this! For acoustic gigs with upright base in the right room it sounds great, I have had to boost the bass/suitcase a little by mic and Im thinking about adding a trigger.

I'ts my Ludwig/Samsonite suitcase set!

Cool. So what's the trick to attaching the pedal to the case and how is the case anchored?

Here's the bottom of mine. The tongue's held on with industrial Velcro. The rubber feet help keep it in place....

I attached a door hinge at the bottom of the suitcase. I also stuck some velcro tape on the hinge so when it's closed it stays closed. I also put velcro on the bottom of the case and pedal to prevent slipping. So far the case stays upright just fine and as long as I use a little drum rug it doesn't slide. Remember- I'm not playing classic rock. (see the picture)
