Vintage "Toy" snare drums Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Hello.

I just got back from this weekend's estate sale-ing and I happened to come across yet another, unmarked "toy" snare drum and stand. It's 10" in diameter -probably about 3" deep....black painted wood rims....4-strand, red, braided cloth snare wires...."tin" body. I think the stand is a W&A.

I also got a cool old cymbal arm for rim-mounted, suspended cymbal and two old clip on spurs (the little ones) and an old Leedy bass drum pedal -like this one:

I would have negotiated the price, but they were holding firm since it was the first day of the sale, but I got all the stuff for $35.00. That wasn't a "bad" price -just not the kind of price I usually pay at sales. I am a shrewd negotiator!

Anyway, this drum makes the 4th snare drum that would have been considered a "toy" drum back in the old days. I see them on EBay, occasionally. They usually don't bring any kind of big money or anything. Most of the time, they are pretty beat up. This one seems to have been well-treated. The calf heads are still intact, anyway. The drum is probably nearly 100 years old, I think!

Anyone know the type of drums I am talking about?

I'll try to post pictures later.

Thanks

That was the only pic that I could get to load. I couldn't figure out the way to format the file small enough to fit within the prescribed size limit. Anyway...maybe you can get the idea from that pic.

Thanks! yes, the t-rods are kinda cool on this one. It only has 5 of them. Hey, maybe it's one of the early 5-lug Gretsch drums! LOL!

The drum, itself is unmarked -as are three of the four I own. The shells' edges are "rolled" and I guess that gives the shells enough stiffness to keep them from warping.

I go to these sales almost every weekend and never find anything related to old drums. Today, was different!

If any of you guys have old toy drums please post them on this thread. Thanks!

This could be one of the first snares to incorperate the T-rod lug style thingy with the hooks vs. the old rope style drums.. From what i can find, it looks to be very old , . Hmmmm

LoLoLoLo, the search continues

Well, I can add that this drum is a rolled/welded shell (like a coffee can). The solder appears to be lead (always good for kids!).

I "rescued" this stuff from a dank, basement floor that had puddles of water! The high humidity may have been what kept the calfskins moist enough to prevent splitting. I noticed that when I had them inside my house for only a little while, the pitch went way up! (sounded kinda good!) I had to de-tension the heads, though. I'm sure they will split at some point, but I'll try to keep them as "NOS" as I can. lol

The other cool thing is that there were a pair of old sticks that came with it -in almost new condition! They are very short -obviously designed for a child's hands.

Anecdote: Years and years ago, my grandma bought a toy snare drum at a rummage sale and gave it to me. I was a kid at the time and didn't know better. I took one of the t-rods off it and used it as a whammy bar for a friend's new (used) electric guitar because the threads fit. :(

I remember the drum well, in retrospect. It was a single-ply maple shell with red-painted maple rims. It was a Ludwig, but the emblem was a decal (yes, all-original). It was in very near perfect shape all around. I think it ended up being thrown away in the trash one spring house cleaning because it was just "that broken old drum" collecting dust. Damnit! I wish I had it now!

Here's my "toy" drum. It's a circa 1928 Ludwig Juvenile model. Of course, the Ludwig catalog says that its "much more than just a toy". It's 12 inch, all original (as far as I can tell) including sticks, strap, heads and snares. Everything exactly matches the photo in the Ludwig catalog. It is missing the "wings" off of one of the wing tension rods. (Anybody got any vintage 5" wing tension rods?) I did lightly sand and repaint the hoops. The original paint was turning to dust and came off on everything that touched the hoops. Used Minwax paste funiture polish on the shell. This was my first "collector" drum purchase. I just thought it would look nice on the mantel...started me on this affliction!
