Thanks for the date info K.O. Yes, I'm lucky. I do look every day, so there is some diligence in with that luck. I think I've seen maybe a dozen vintage USA kits come up on craigslist in the greater part of Montana in the last 2-3 years. And I'm pretty sure one of those sets was my first set that I sold 20 years ago (attached picture of red sparkles.) I bought what I now know was a Standard set in a pawnshop for $220 in 1992ish (I remember the money better than the date because I was a poor college student. It was for the rehearsal space. I was the guitar player. I tried to buy THAT kit when it came back up. It was in really nice shape. The guy sent me a text yesterday. ~'You were right. I did list the pedal with the set. Sorry about that. Come and pick it up.' The tension in the sale was probably because I thought he was trying to back out on what he said was included and he thought I was trying to get something for nothing. BTW: He was asking $100 and I gave him $100. So he gave me the Speed King and I gave him 2 pounds of honey from my bees as a thank-you for honoring his listing. (If anybody needs some Montana honey all proceeds go to keep the bees alive and support my drum addiction. LOL) A little forgiveness with honey on top.

Cool, at least he held up his end of the bargain, to a certain extent..

Now you got a great player's kit, with that distinct vintage Ludwig tone ! I would take that honey any day of the week ! Being a drummer AND lead vocalist in my band, i could use all the honey i can get ! :D

Ruby stayed available for as long as they made the Standards which seems to have been from approx. 1968-1972ish. I'd GUESS these were actually from the tail end of production due to the classic lugs which the factory may have used on sets at the tail end of the run when they knew they were going to be discontinued and therefore didn't want to stock any more of the smooth lugs but still had customer orders for drum sets to fill...but that's just a theory and maybe they were made sometime earlier and they were just low on the Standard lugs that week. Or maybe someone else changed the lugs out at some point in their life...but I doubt it as that would be an expensive endeavor without really improving the drums significantly or substantially increasing their value. But you never know.... Those lugs are probably considered to be a "plus" today so you're even luckier than you obviously already were.Serial numbers might give some indication. Rick Gier has Standards included in his Ludwig dating guide. They used a different series of numbers than the other Ludwigs.

Got a little more time to scrub and look at the bass. I think you are right about the date, KO. Well, that is if all the stuff I have been reading is correct. Damn, Ludwig history is confusing! The shells are (outside) mahogany, poplar, maple (inside.) If what I read is correct this points to the 70's. The other picture is just to show how much the wrap has faded.

BTW: I'm not trying to revive this thread. Sometimes I post stuff so there will be something that comes up in a search for the next poor sucker who is scratching his head in frustration.

While whacking on these old buggers the center tube was slipping down. I pulled it to measure it so I could buy a memory lock. I did not catch it before but I'm guessing that the mount is not original because there is a slot for a memory lock. The mounting holes line up perfect. The shell was not redrilled. So looking at memory locks I figured why not get a new Ludwig mount for it that has a matching memory lock that is made to fit? P1610d and P1763A. The problem I am seeing is that this bolt pattern is measuring 2 1/2" center to center and I see that the P1610D says its pattern is 2 1/16" c to c (though another listing has it as 2 1/8" c to c.) It is listed as a direct replacement for 60s/ 70s style drums. Can anybody give me some insight on this?

That isn't a Ludwig plate on your drum. Possibly Tama, or some other import. Not Ludwig or any of the other big American makes that I recognize.

Thanks K.O.

Just realized that I had not pulled that mount when I was cleaning! Just pulled it. Obviously modified. Holy crap how did I miss that? Me being stupid or too excited to get some heads on it.....

Found it. Duh.... 70s ish Tama.

If no extra holes were drilled you may be in luck. I've seen them on ebay sometimes, doesn't seem too too rare. Still cool!

Can't argue with that! And I really appreciate the help everyone has given. I wouldn't have know to go grab them without help. Like I said I know VERY little about Ludwigs or I probably would not have missed that mount. Newbie mistake!

The holes were elongated a touch. By the fading on the wrap it looks like a Ludwig mount will still cover. A pile of them just popped up on ebay. I already ordered a modern version: "P1610d". I figured these are in 'players condition' so a modern look-alike replacement shouldn't hurt the value any.
