Dave knows drums!
Watch this clip (song is pretty good)
As soon as the song is done, Dave heads right to the drummer and asks "how old are those?" (referring to the Rogers kit)

He often does that. If there's a unique or vintage kit. He'll say "are those yours?" then he'll ask "how old are they?"
Many do not know that Dave is an avid drummer. Here's my story:
Around '96, the Late Show did a month of Fridays in different towns. One of the Fridays were in Chicago. I was working with another guy building drums. We had built Anton a snare and he invited us up to the taping in Chicago. So we get there for rehearsal, meet Anton, give him the drum, etc. Anton puts it on the kit to play. They run the entire show. After rehearsal, Dave comes over to Anton's kit, sits down, pulls out a brand new pair of sticks, and proceeds to play. After a couple of measures, he stops, looks down at the snare, turns to Anton and asks, "Something new?" Anton then introduces us and tells him we built it, blah, blah. Dave hits a couple of times, looks at again, and then says, "Nice job, it sounds good." Then he plays for a little bit. Gets down and walks away. Anton then tells us that he does that almost every night and that Dave is a drummer himself. And he ALWAYS pulls out a new pair of sticks from Anton's stick bag.
Anyway, Anton plays the snare on the show that night. As the night progresses, he plays more and more fills on the snare, then telling us the more he played it, the more he liked it.
Anyway, Dave is a drummer, just like Carson was.....

A very interesting story! I honestly did not know Letterman was a drummer! Learned something new! Thanks for sharing your story!

No offense Vibes, but they look cooler on Todd, although you definitely have the better shirt.
Okay, so Dave's a closet drummer. Not surprising given all his similarities to Carson, but at least Carson would play on-air sometimes. With Dave's interest in vintage equipment, makes you wonder what he plays at home, and why he isn't a forum member here yet.

Very interesting. Love to see a picture of the snare you made for Anton! Maybe dave just has no confidence in his playing and so he won't play on air just to get a laugh. Who knows.
No offense taken Mchair, that was a few years ago. I dont look anything like that now. I can't believe I even owned that shirt. And the mustache, ehhgads. Oh well, Davy Jones made me get rid of it in 2006. Was on me a year about it. Ya know Todd is a pretty good drummer himself. I always loved the drums he played on "Something Anything".
What a strange finish!! I like the full kit pictured from the catalogue, but I'm not so sure about it with the close up of the Snare on Lettermans desk. Interesting though.
Just saw this and remembered this thread...
