I just acquired the move and I'm going to sit back, relax and watch it tonight. I love these old movies.

Gary

From Purdie Shuffle

Looks like he can really play to me! If he's only lip-synching the drum part, he's doing a damn good job of matching the music beat for beat! Check out Micky on the vibes!!!Drummer Boy - YouTubeJohn

If anybody else wants to watch the entire movie, it's called: 'Strike Up the Band!' It was made in 1940. I think Amazon has copies, or you can try to track down a copy of it online.

Enjoy, some great music and great performances in there! Plus... Judy Garland singing Swing music! As good as it gets.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

If I remember correctly, Mickey and Judy and their whole big band of high school kids were attending a "society" ball or cotillion that featured the Paul Whiteman Orchestra. They waited for Whiteman's outfit to be on break between sets. They then jumped onstage, and began to play the instruments of Whiteman's musicians. That was very nervy and unsanitary.... But, what the hell......it's only a movie. Those "Let's put on a show" movies were very entertaining. I remember watching this one and several others when I was a kid in the 50's and 60's.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

From teverson-sr

He probably played on the recording he's playing with in the movie scene. The "stick-synching" is too close to what he's doing to be someone else's recording. And it's pretty damn good, considering it's not a M.Drummer drum-off, it's a movie. See that, Judy shows him a little cleavage and WATCH OUT!

Judy was a total babe in this era. Wowsa.

And no surprise that Mickey was a great drummer, just as Fred Astair was. How could you be a great tap dancer during those vaudeville days and not be able to drum also?
