I played a 50 ply snare before. It was like a gun shot: loud and over with quickly.

Be sure to check out articles on how much glue is used in stave drums, too, and how the vertical grain and stress-free construction impacts resonance...

Years ago at the shop O.C.D.P. i made a snare drum.The shell was 40 ply with the rings being 60 ply.The way i made it is i glued 4-10 ply shells together inside each other and added 2 10 ply rings making the rings 60 ply.The drum was 6.5x15...It was very loud!!!!!....Mikey

A good friend of mine was endorsed by OC drums (I think). Anyway, his snare is 22 ply. That sucker seemed awfully loud. Its kind of funny - I couldnt believe his snare was that thick; he couldnt believe that my Radio King was only a single ply :). Ill stick with the RK!

I have seen an early 80s Tama superstar 8x14 that was 40 ply and about an inch thick. I was told it was custom for an endorser. It was loud and nothing more.

Yesterday I followed a link from a post here to a good article about drum shell construction, and while the article was quite informative, it did have one piece of information that made me wonder. In the article, there is a comparison between the amount of glue on a single ply shell and the amount on a 10-ply shell. The difference is quite vast, of course, but it made me wonder--how many 10-ply drums shells are out there? I mean, that's a lot of plies. So, what's the highest number of plies in a shell anyone here has ever heard of or played? Just curious. Walking

There a sh*t load of 9 ply Phonics out there and prolly just as many 12 ply Sigs. too !i

Some of the modern drums sonor is makeing can have 15 plys and be much lighter than the Phonics or Signatures !i

The plys on these multi-ply drums are very thin.....I have a piece of ply a builder uses and it's .06mm (20=1.2cm = less than .5 inch). So his 40 (for example) would be well under an inch thick shell.

I personally like the idea of a ONE ply (solid) shell). I love my three plys.

Yes - 50 ply shells are in use though and as stated here they are loud.

This is just a theory of mine - I'm thinking they're 'loud' because of the amount of glue used in the making of the shell. Maybe the glue has a more reflective quality than the wood. Just a thought.

Don't know where this is from - just picked it off the internet a couple years ago. I had never seen anything like it before. I know nothing about it......left to our observations.
