Ditto here I love my 1964 camco blue sparkle - check it out in the gallery

The best sounding drums were by far the Camco's, 6ply 73/74 L.A. Era over the 60s Oaklawns. Second choice? Roger's late 60s Dayton, Ohio , Then Slingerland 3ply Mahogany from the early 60s.

So, I'm sitting here scanning through my Netflix suggested viewing selections and came across the first Saturday Night season. Episode One - There was a sweet Rogers kit behind Billy Preston and a cool Hayman kit with Janice Ian. Neato.

I currently own three vintage Slingerland kits, a vintage Leedy (Slinger-leedy era), and one vintage Gretsch kit.

The Slingerlands just feel and sound "right" to me, or at least familiar.

I love my Gretsch kit, but it doesn't light me up like Slingerlands.

late 60's early 70's Ludwig based on reliabillity of hardware and versatillity of sound, sure the other brands sound great and not everybody has one, but if I still had to do everything I do with my current drums on a vintage kit it would have to be a Ludwig.

I like Drums...
1963 Ludwig Downbeat Champagne Sparkle
1964 Leedy (Slingerland) Blue n Silver Duco
1964 Ludwig Club Date Sparkling Silver Pearl
1966 Ludwig Super Classic Sparkling Silver Pearl
1968 Gretsch round badge modern jazz orange stain
1972 Slingerland 85N Pop outfit Light Blue Pearl
1976 Ludwig Vistalite clear
1981 Gretsch SSB Gran Prix Rosewood
1987 Yamaha Turbo Tour Custom Mellow Yellow
1991 Pearl Export Ferrari Red

From Mike T

Rogers simply the best drums and hardware ever made..

Not that the vintage Rogers weren't very fine drums, but I think a lot of people forget the vintage Sonor, as also once being a very high quality product.

I love Slingerlands but there's nothing quite like the sound of a Rogers Dynasonic snare. I've put together my dream set over the last 18 years or so. I came across a late 70's, pretty beat up, 7 piece (excluding the snare, cymbals and hardware) set of Slingerland COWs. I've pieced the kit together using all my favorites including all Zildjians. I've just recently located a pair of smaller matching concert toms and I'm thinking of adding these to the kit. The pics are posted on the Drum Image Gallery under "Late 70s Slingerland."

I have 1973 Slingerlands they get the sound I'm looking for. My son has a set of 1967 Ludwig's. I wouldn't cry if I had to play those.

Look at the popularity chart for people who posted here. I love it that this forum is not a fanatical mob of Luddy Huggers and Gretsch Geeks who dismiss the rest of us as imbeciles. I have nothing against those brands. I simply prefer Slingerland, Rogers, Camco, and Walberg & Auge over Ludwig and Gretsch. I think that Rogers Rats are not showing their support very well here. But, we Slingy Savants are representing quite nicely.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

I would have to say my Ludwigs over all, but love my Chanute Camco's.

Also have a mid 70's resonator Premier set, and it sounds as good as anything I own. My first Luwig 1971 set was burned in a club fire. It was a amazing sounding set.

I voted Slingerland just because of the combination of history, sound, style and looks, and of course Buddy played them enough said........oh and plus I own a vintage set.

Great poll question, and I agree, where are all of the Rogers players? That'd be my second choice, great style, sound, quality and history.
