So I had a Guitar Center gift card burning a hole in my pocket after father's day and decided to go online and see if they had any Supraphonics for my 64 down beat I recently completed. I came across a 64 in Michigan that wanted $ 250.00 and decided to give em a call about it. Once I got em on the phone they said it actually had no serial number but red felt muffler. So I had em send me some pics then rolled the dice on it. Just got it today and most of the stuff that looked like pitting in the pictures they sent has so far been just leftover scotch tape gunk and grease. So she's cleaning up good. Still playing the C.O.B. or not C.O.B game with it. She's weighing in just over 8 pounds and has the rolled lip. No real distinguishing seam though. Couple different spots that have vertical lines but nothing that screams whether it is or not. Either way it should be a sharp first Super when I'm done. I'll post the after pics once I am done puling it apart and polishing her up !.....Here are the before pics !

I think what you have there is COB!!!! in the last of your pictures i can see what looks like a seam! looks excactly like the interiour of my 1960s COB Supra.
if the shell has no pitting and is weighing as much as you said, it's even more likely. Someone might have excanged the round knob muffler for a Baseball Bat muffler over the years, it's the same hole-pattern.
Congrats on a great Score!
What about the sound my man? How does she sound?? band3

That appears to be a gift card wll spent!
It's COB... nice score!Walking. It's the last type/configuration of the COB Super 400's probably from '61.
One of my COB Supers has the same baseball bat/red felt muffler.
The curled under flanges on the edges of the shell is the give away... the aluminum ones go down, away from the side of the shell, and don't curl back under.
That's probably one GREAT sounding snare, mine are, just love 'em.
Thanks for the input guys. I have not had a chance to play it yet because she came in so late last night. I compared it to an early 60's Super sensitive shell I have and the edge's are way different. Plus this one has that deep crimped snare bed. Heading to GC to grab some Puresound wires for it cuz the ones that came with it are a little beat and not original anyway. Any suggestions on the Puresound wires ? I know a lot of people go with the 20 strand custom.

Dream score man...G.C. does this more then we know...Its always a good idea to keep a check on//in there stores/online offerings...SWEET!!!
I was really surprised to see the stuff they had at G.C. Seems like certain stores like the Hollywood location are pretty steep in their pricing but other locations are all over the map.....I'll be posting some clean up pics through out the weekend as I avoid the honey do list in favor of polishing this sucker...Oh and I have to say they were really helpful with description and sending pictures when I called. Way more helpful than when I actually walk in a store and try to get service. It was weird.

Wow this is weird. Started stripping this baby down and underneath the bottom rolled edge of the drum there is a bright brass color showing through.. as if it was never plated. Left side of the crimp looks normal and right of the crimp looks like bare brass. Looks almost like someone was a little tipsy at the Ludwig plant and missed plating a side.

if the baseball bat muffler is a red felt version, then it could be very well be original. most ludwig cob models are round knob but there are also red felt pre serial cob models out there as well. end of the run as mentioned. great score.
