1920s ludwig 8 lug black beauty deluxe snare with wave pattern Last viewed: 2 minutes ago

Oddball I was wondering myself if it was gold plated. Were the pattern is etched on the outside of the snare you can see like a gold surface behind etching.. but hey what do I know, it could be copper..I only had my son take the skin off to see what that plug went to. It's back together and in a box under my bed.

Now that I know its a pretty desirable snare. I kinda wanna keep it. My son is just dying to get his hands on it. Slap some new heads on it and take it for a spin. Lol I'm watching one on eBay right now. But that one.is in rougher shape than the one I found. Plus the one on eBay is missing some parts.

Thank goodness you're not letting your son touch this rare piece. "Slap some new heads on it and take it for a spin" ?? He's missing the whole point completely. With new heads and wire snares, it wouldn't sound anything like what it is supposed to sound like. This would be like dropping a new Toyota engine into a 1929 Packard to see how old cars ran! Keep those calfskin heads and gut snares where they belong. Congrat's on an absolutely wonderful find!

Only the trim would be Gold plated, the shell has Copper under the black Chrome so the Chrome will adhere better. That`s what use see through the engraving.

Did you try the bulb in a lamp ?

It`s not etching, totally different process. That is hand engraved.

That actually might be black oxide Nickel over brass if you see brass through the engraving. I don`t think they had Chrome in the twenties.

Can you put it on a stand and take pictures of it outside in the daylight, or better lighting with NO FLASH ?

Ya will take some better pictures when I get home from work. Will try to get 5-6 from different angles. Prob won't test light bulb. The skins were on the shell real snug and I don't want to risk damaging them...the skins.... The pics I posted were pretty bad.. two were taken while it was sitting on passang

I hope Mike sees this and give you advice. I`m just posting off memory but he knows EVERYTHING about this drum.

For instance, I don`t even see a snarebed crimp under the throw-off. Things like that he would know.

See now that looks like the Deluxe finish in this light. That`s the lacquer tinted with something. Does it say pat. applied for, or pat. pend. on the strainer ? Again I see no crimp under the strainer. It`s a sure bet mike has one of these.
