1964 Ludwig BOP Ringo Kit - Input Please Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Hey everyone! I'm super excited to have finally found the kit I've been after for years and years. After searching high and low with no success, I found this advertised locally and picked it up a few days ago about 20 miles from my house. These were bought from the original owner who played them in his basement since they were new. Aside from a thick layer of dust and some yellowing, they are in incredible shape and completely unmolested. I'm very excited to start cleaning them up and putting them back into use. My question for you guys is what to do about the yellowing? Has anyone had any success getting the yellow out? I'll definitely post pics as I go along. Any comments on the wrap or on cleaning in general would be greatly appreciated. Excited

...of course, it wouldn't be nice to tease you with a post like that and not put up any pics. Here are a couple to give you an idea of what I've got. I'll get some better ones shortly. I hope they excite some of you at least a bit as much as I am Clapping Happy2

They don't look yellow to me, and if they are, the process could damage the wrap permanately. Just clean them and polish with Novus and you will see a big difference. What snare came with it?

Hey Lucky, unfortunately, they didn't come with a snare, but I was happy to get them at all. I happen to have a couple of nice matching Supras and a Super sensitive that would do the trick. Regarding the wrap, it is fairly yellowed, it just doesn't show up much in the pics. I'll try to post better ones soon that show the condition more clearly.

congrats on finding that kit. thats awesome that you even found one of those and especially a one owner. the wrap looks great to me. get some novus and give them a good cleaning. it will get some nice gloss to them and they will look amazing. if you don't have novus, just clean them and wax them up nicely.

Thanks Mike, I'm super stoked! My weekend has been full of social events, so I haven't been able to get at 'em yet which I'm just itching to do!

tb14 - Silly me, in my excitement, I didn't list sizes for you guys. To make it up to you, I'll give you a full description. The kit is a Super Classic 13, 16, 22. I was able to open up the 13" tom and found a red date stamp showing Feb 21, 1964. Both toms have red baseball bal mufflers that are in fantastic shape. COB hoops and all original tension rods. Original resonant heads on the toms. The bass drum has all the original hardware including the older 60's style brackets, rail consolette and mount. No extra holes anywhere! The white interiors are nice and clean. The keystone badges are in great shape (the one on the bass drum has shifted, but I'll get it straightened up), and the serial numbers are in the low 5 digits. The only thing that I find odd is the floor tom legs. I got 2 sets and neither of them looks right. I have one set that looks like 70's Ludwig, and another set that I don't think are Ludwig at all. I'll take some pics and I'll let those who know better chime in. Let me know if I missed anything.

Nice score.

The L arm on your console is not original. It should be equal length on both ends and have the diamond patterned knurling. They are not that hard to find if you are worried about originality.

Thanks thin shell, I figured the L arm wasn't right. I'd like to get the kit back to being as original as possible, but my main objective is to get it clean and playable. I'll get an L arm and floor tom legs in due course as they're easy parts to swap out. I'm hoping to be able to get going on them this afternoon. I'm going to see if I can find some novus as was suggested.
