1964 Ludwig BOP Ringo Kit - Input Please Last viewed: 4 minutes ago

This set is a great find! 1964--those shells were up on the shelf when Ringo ordered his--he could have gotten these, & you could have gotten his!

For some reason, i really like Black Oyster Pearl when some of the white has yellowed; doesn't look as good on the Blue Oyster, but I dig it on the Black. So, don't fret if it stays a bit yellowed--you'll come to like it, when you're as old as I am.........marko

Thanks Marko, I appreciate your comments. I agree - I was excited to see a date stamp of Feb 21, 1964. Andy Babiuk’s book 'Beatles Gear', states that Ringo was first seen using his 3rd BOP kit (his first Super Classic - the first 2 were downbeats, as we all know) on May 31, 1964 at the Prince of Wales Theater in London. The idea that his kit and this one were manufactured right around the same time is quite plausible, and that makes me grin. I agree that a bit of yellow isn't bad on this wrap, but these were downright filthy dirty! Thanks again for the comments :)

Okay everyone, so here's the update. I got the novus, and all I can say is WOW! Check out this pic showing the cleaned 13" tom and the untouched floor tom side by side. It's not the best pic, but you get the idea. I'm a novus believer! This is better than anything else I've seen, bar none. I've cleaned up some drums very nicely in the past and buffed the wrap up with automotive wax and got what I thought to be excellent results, but this stands alone! Thank you, thank you for the advice and the interest in my project. I can't wait to get them done. So... heads... what do you guys say?

wowser!! what a difference. cant wait to see all the finished results.

you'll get a million different ideas on heads. if they were mine, i'd usually go with remo coated ambassadors top and bottom. but my next set of batter heads for my 60's ludwigs are gonna be ludwig weathermasters in mediums or heavys(heavys are the same as coated ambassadors in weight).

You used trick photography;) That came out great! I felt the same way about Novus when I detailed my 62 wmp Slingerlands which were a little to yellow for my liking, they came out a real nice creamy color. I agree with Mike about the Ludwig heads, I am going to put them on my Super Classics. Hurry up, I can't wait to see the whole kit!

Told ya they would clean up great!Burger Kin

Nite and Day difference..........

I used to use 100% cotton towels to rub the Novus off,but lately, have just been using paper towels!

WAY easier to deal with, and cheaper...................

I think I would try the Ludwig heads too.......have heard good things about using them on Ludwig drums..............

Thanks Mike and Lucky. I like the idea of trying out the Weathermasters, but they're tough to get locally, unless I order them up online. None of the many local shops carry them.

Lucky - the only trick in my photography is that I used my crappy phone camera :). I was so amazed that I had to take that pic to sho you guys. I first cleaned the shells with a light duty natural multi-surface spray cleanser. The lugs and hoops were done with Barkeeper's Friend (the liquid one).

Blair - what can I say? Awesome suggestion! I used old white cotton t-shirts to apply the novus and buff the wrap. I cut the shirts up into smaller rags and it worked great.

Hey Lucky, unfortunately, they didn't come with a snare, but I was happy to get them at all. I happen to have a couple of nice matching Supras and a Super sensitive that would do the trick. Regarding the wrap, it is fairly yellowed, it just doesn't show up much in the pics. I'll try to post better ones soon that show the condition more clearly.

That's a really FAB find!!! They don't look yellow to me ,either. The correct snare for a Ringo set would be a Jazz Fest model ( wood). I'm still jealous..

Definitely go with the Ludwig Weathermaster heads! The kit will sound, and look, great with Medium Coated heads. You can get a great price from Interstate Music; www.interstatemusic.com

Thanks Larry, I'm loving them so far. I'll be keeping my eyes open for a Jazz Fest, but I know it won't be cheap. I'd be open to a re-wrap if it keeps the cost down. I saw a WFL wood snare in BOP a while back and it wasn't terribly expensive.

idrum4fun - Great site! Their prices on a bunch of things are really good. Thanks for sharing!

tayedrummertom - Thanks for the comments. I'll definitely keep you all posted and I'll be sure to post a pic of everything all put together.
