1968 Downbeat Doors Kit Value Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Loading...

Checking out vintage kits on eBay and found this listing for a 1968 Downbeat kit wrapped in original Mod Orange. The title included "FINAL AUCTION/LISTING !!!!" with a BIN of $6499. Didn't sell, so it got listed again, also with "FINAL AUCTION...!!!" and a BIN of $5,999.00. So, what do you Ludwig experts feel this kit is worth? Ebay item 252462836204

Here's some of his description:

1968 Vintage Ludwig Downbeat in Mod Orange!! Excellent well kept condition !!

Your chance to own one of the most iconic and sought after kits of all time !!

This is extremely rare as this possibly may be the ONLY remaining Downbeat in Mod Orange left in the world beside John Densmore's!!!

In all my years, I've never seen another Mod Orange Downbeat come up for sale let alone in excellent condition like this one.

This is truly the Holy Grail of Vintage Drum Kits and a once in a lifetime chance to own it.

The sun takes the purple out of that finish, he should have the set inside.

Mod orange is rare in that configuration but surely there's a few downbeat sets around.

That might be the nicest one though?

For a set with great unfaded purple (hard to tell in the photo) and in those sizes it's not priced too high I think.

This set was listed on eBay a while back and the guy selling it bought it for $4000.00. He originally had it up on eBay for $10,000.00 but the price keeps coming down. I watched it pretty hard as I considered the first time it sold for $4000.00. I really don't have that kind of coin to drop but I have been looking for a downbeat for years. This one certaily looks nice but I have been researching these sets for many years and there are other downbeats out there. I have a really nice 14x14 from 1968 that I added to my 1969 22,13,16.

Bun E, our buddy Frank wins the prize for best mod orange downbeat. His set is IDENTICAL to John's set as his was made in Oct of 1967 and John's was made around July/Aug. Franks set also came with a supra AND an original matching jazzfest. Not only that(if what I said wasn't already enough) Frank's set is virtually unfaded and I'm thinking he must have gone back to 1967 with Doc Brown to grab the set as it looks pretty much brand new! I highly doubt a nicer set will ever be found....

Interesting to hear you put a value on it Bun E. As much as I would still like one after all these years, I could never justify spending $6000.00.

Frank wins!! Of course I'd love to see Frank's set and snare drum.....

The 'bay set earlier in this thread has scuffing on top and the purple doesn't appear to be very strong, especially on the bass drum (I saw the auction pics since posting above). So, in retrospect, I probably wouldn't go as high as 6K if it was me searching.

As for Frank's drums;

The snare drums go for 4-5K, I sold one a couple months back.

If his set's as nice as you say, Frank could probably name his price.

And, nice purple keystone mod orange drums seem to be significantly rare than B+O mod orange.

This might actually be a crazier listing than the $8,000 Ringo set...

I'm really appreciating all the posts and insight of this kit! Interesting that it sold for $4K, but I'm not sure the value of this particular kit has gone up to the asking price. Of course, the seller most likely is calculating in the cost of all the fees. My girlfriend is one of the biggest Door's fans around, but I really don't think I could afford this kit!

Guess I don't have to worry about this kit! Just checked the auction and it's no longer available for sale. I'm sure he got a good offer for it!
