'53 Leedy & Ludwig Kit Last viewed: 5 hours ago

From leedybdp

I had a 1954 set of Leedy & Ludwig drums with drum sizes of 14x24, 16x18, 8x12, and the same model snare as this one in matching wrap. The 18" floor tom had four legs. The wrap looked to be just like the drums in this thread---a rich turquoise blue glass glitter. I don't think that the wrap is faded at all. There have been many versions of Blue Glass Glitter and Blue Sparkle from the same wrap maker over the years. At first, I thought that this was my former L&L set. But, the sizes are different. I love it. Enjoy!

I would have loved a 24" bass drum, but I'll take what I got. You know what's funny about the floor tom...I didn't even notice it had 4 legs until last night! When I was unpacking it, I set 3 of the legs to a certain height and flipped it over, but it starting leaning over. I adjusted the final leg, but didn't even count...I just thought to myself, "Man...I swore I adjusted all 3 legs and not just 2!" Ha!

Thanks a lot, Vinny! It seems like a few of us were admiring at her on the bay and guess I was the lucky one to bring her home. She's definitely in a good home, Fellas...and will pretty much stay in the home. I will definitely be taking her out for a spin soon, though.

I was right...what a beautiful kit! Interesting how you have spurs mounted on the bass drum shell but hoop-mounted tom and I have a shell-mounted tom holder but clip on spurs. Thanks for sharing the pic...she's a beaut!

Those drum sets were new during a period of phasing in shell-mounted hardware and phasing out hoop-mounted hardware. Store owners and drummers were still deciding if they preferred the older or the newer technology. To some degree, that kind of old vs new preference still continues for guitarists, bassists, and drummers. I suppose it goes on for other instruments, too. But, I don't know a lot about those instruments.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

I joined today specifically to congratulate you on landing this kit! I too saw it on the 'bay'. A while back, a L&L time capsule kit turned up on CL and no sooner had I called about it than someone snagged it. Lo and behold, a few weeks later, its components started showing up on eBay. Glad this one will be in the hands of someone who appreciates it!

I'm with you on this...it was a transitional time.

This one also has a cymbal mount that I am not familiar with. The t-handle matches the t-rods, so I'm thinking it's Leedy...just never seen one like this before.

Anyone have any input on this cymbal mount? She holds the cymbal arm really well, by the way.

Right on, Bro...I'm honored that your first post was in response to my drum set. Thanks and welcome to the club! I've had other kits slip away and I've scored a couple of times...this one just happened to be a big one! Guess it was my turn again. What kind of kit are you playing?

Wow! I didn't know until just now that DW copied a Camco copy of a George Way cymbal L rod receiver as far back as 1953. But, seriously, folks.......that receiver is a new one to me. It looks to be quite substantial. Consider this.....the Leedy deco lug is essentially a half circle with one flattened end that has similar sculpting on the sides to the sculpting on the top of this receiver and the original George Way/Camco/DW lug. The sculpted top of the circle, when cut in half, becomes the sides of Leedy lugs.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.
