Anyone use canister thrones? Last viewed: 1 hour ago

I have a Rogers canister throne. I don't use it because it is cumbersome to carry. If it had a handle on it I would probably use it. Any ideas on how to put a handle on it without drilling any holes?

The only way I could imagine is to fabricate either 1 or 2 metal hoops to go around the canister with a clasp that A allows them to grip and B has some sort of eyelet to attach the ends of a handle too. Or has it's own raised section that acts as a handle. Will probably take away from the look a bit though. Unless you stick a matching finish to the hoops to hide them.

I've always liked the look of them. As a seat could they be prone to toppling over judging by the height to the radius of the base? I mean if you're restaurant jazzing then fine, but if you're putting your ass into it and going for some delicious full on move around the kit and shifting your weight around could it be a bit iffy??

I haven't ever had a concern with mine falling over, there's also a video of the raconteurs drummer using one in concert and he doesn't seem to have any trouble.

... may I add to what BuddyLudwig and mlayton said... absolutely NO ISSUE on toppling over... even under "spirited" playing! They really aren't that "small" in circumference .. the Rogers is 13" ... and they are incredibly stable! A lot depends on what height you are comfortable sitting at too, as the canisters are anywhere from 21" to 23" tall.

Easy way is to get a nylon sling or rope loop. Wrap it around the center putting one side through the other making a comfortable handle. Done! On and off in 10 seconds without a trace.

Believe it or else!

Cool! Thanks for the suggestion. I'll give it a try.

I went back to using Rogers Cannister thrones a couple of years ago. Once you get used to them you realize that they can actually enhance your playing due to their ergonomics. There is not as much seating surface and you are sitting closer to the edge. There is less interference with the top part of the back of your legs and allows better leg movement.

I was putting together a small set up last night (to take to a rehearsal) and just couldn't get a regular Gibraltar throne to feel right. Then I realized I was used to a Cannister throne.

I have also found the standard height of 24" to be fine, but a disclaimer is in order.... I use a Rogers swivo BD pedal and a Swivo hi hat stand. Both have the one piece footboards which actually raise your feet about an inch off the floor so the throne feels just right. (I recently had a discussion with a good friend who is the same height. He just couldn't get comfortable with the 24" height, but then realized that he used the two piece swivo pedal which placed your feet on the floor.)

I always found it interesting that Buddy always used the Cannister thrones and he sure didn't have a tall stature. However, also realize that he used the one piece swivo pedals which elevated his feet.

Here's the throne with my current at home set up...

The vintage models will indeed still "be able to perform it's case duties" , but... I choose not to do that as the interior on mine is pristine, so it shall stay that way! What I did do is get a custom case for it though, so transport is easy and the canister stays protected!Tommyp

I like that case. Great solution! Oh c'mon, get that interior scuffed up! LOL!

Forgot to add that there are some vulcanized cases still around for those 60's era thrones. I have one that a good friend gave me. It is stenciled "Rogers-drums" and for Brent Brace. Anyone know Brent Brace is? Too bad it didn't say "Buddy Rich", but if I remember correctly, there was one of those floating around a few years ago.
