There was a classic Ludwig set up that came with Timbales instead of toms. See maybe the 1974 Catslogue. Wonder if someone ordered them with a standard set.

Nice score. The standards are great drums. I've got some friends who've been recording at Daptone each time they tour the US and the house kit there is an old Standard kit. Sounds incredible, apparently.

Timbale toms came with these drums. The timbs are B/O badge though. The inside of my standard shells are granitone so that tells me these were probably some of the last standards? The only thing that makes me think these didn't come together though is the timbs were drilled with standard tom mounts.

The very earliest Standards had the white "resocoat" interiors and the rest all had Granitone inside so yours could be from almost anytime after 1968 during the Standard run. My theory is that they were still using mahogany on the inner plies so they kept painting them or they were using the "prettier" shells for the classics and hiding the less attractive ones with paint and shuffling them off into Standard land. Just a cosmetic thing for sure, they were making the same 3 ply shells on the same machines and using them for both lines.

Someone might have ordered a set and mixed and matched as they saw fit. If a drummer wanted to save a few bucks (or really liked the Strata wraps) he might order Standard drums but if he also wanted timbales for toms he'd have to get them from the main line as there were no Standard line timbales. Certainly not impossible to imagine someone doing so.

The strata wraps are awesome, & virgin bass would be perfect for me since I've never been crazy about the standard tom mount. I'd spring for a Classic rail consolette & cymbal mount when you find a 12.......marko

The Ludwig Standard mount had been replaced by a previous owner with the Classic double tom mount. This set has only one mounted tom. I don't like seeing a half empty double tom mount. I gave some thought to using the second side for a splash cymbal or a cowbell, but decided against it when I found this new style Ludwig single tom mount for very little money. This little gem allows me to position the tom exactly where I want it to be.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Blue (and Ruby) Strata seems to have been among the more popular Standard wraps so finding a matching 12 or 13" tom should be pretty easy. That "virgin" bass drum means this was originally part of one of the double bass drum sets. Too bad the rest of it is gone.

Exactly my thought in regards to the "virgin" bass drum. To my knowledge of the Standard series, they were pre-configured kits and customization was not possible.

Individual Standard drums were cataloged so it would be possible to order some drums and customize a kit but you're right that for the most part all the Standard sets you see seem to fall within the confines of the various cataloged sets...this one being a possible exception. Although there is really no way to ever know (short of finding the original paperwork) if these are just a portion of an original double bass "catalog" set or if the timbales were somehow part of the mix from day one.

Wouldn't life be so much easier if this catalog page were still in effect....?

Seems weird to me that they would make a double bass set with 20 inch bass drums though. Not sure what size EC has but my virgin blue strata kick drum is a 20. Did they do double bass sets with 20 inch drums?

You're right. The cataloged double bass set has two 22's. The puzzle becomes even more complex.
