I have a nice pair of 24" Camco walnut stain BD hoops if you are interested...
There were no inlay channels cut from the factory!
They came off a Chanute Drum I had long ago...

I wish that there was better information around on Camcos. I have tried to look this drum over for any clues to it being anything other than a factory Camco drum. The guy I bought it from had pictures of him playing it in the early 90s, maybe late 80s, and that's about as early as I have for history on it. As for the drum. The interior is a matching clear finish, there are no extra holes at all, all of the drum hardware holes are drilled correctly, and fit well, and the original finish that I scraped down to looks like a walnut, or alike dark wood grain. The 6 plies are a little thicker than the toms plies, but without the rerings, I would think a 24 shell of matching thickness would be very flimsy. The bearing edge is more of a roundover edge than the tom's more angle cut sharper edge. the badge is tight and in place, and the grommet looks the same as the toms, but the flange at the backside of it just bells a little as opposed to the toms that rounds over. But as the shell is a little thicker, the stock Camco grommet would not have reached completely through to round over.
Well it sounds like our shells are made the same. Even the color on the inside of the 24" shell matches all the other 6ply Jasper era Oaklawns. They are very unique looking, and unlike any other clear interiors that I have ever seen.
Here's my 24" Camco Chanute era walnut kit. 10 lugs, 6ply Jasper w/ re-rings.

And my former 24" L.A. era natural maple 10 lugs, 6ply Keller w/re-rings

The Jasper and Keller shells sound like night and day. Keller sounds very dry and tight where the Jasper sounds very warm and resonant.
Hey Steve, I've had pretty good luck with the LA Keller shell drums, though I do prefer the older Oaklawn Jasper 4-plyers. I have to use a RIMS mount on the 12" or 13" toms because those little shells are basically lug holders. It's painful to look at the mounts on those LA drums and think of all the stress they put on that thin shell. A RIMS mount might help eliminate that dry and tight sound.
Hell, KY Jelly might do the trick too. Toilet
Cheers, Joe
Thanks Joe however the kit is long gone. I've got my one L.A snare and I'm happy with that.
Those drums are all awesome!! I will post some more pictures of the drums as I figure out what I am doing with mine. My computer is down and I am using our Playstation to check e-mails etc. I hope I wil be able to add some more pictures of what the finish looks like under all the paint. I am still convinced that it is an odd build drum, maybe a special order? Thanks for all the input though.
Nice kits, Slingalud, I even like the maple hoops.
Why isn't cam or co in your handle? How about Slingaludco.
Seriously though, how would you compare the sound of your Oaklawn 6-ply Jasper shells to your LA Keller shells?
