Camco Drums Last viewed: 2 minutes ago

I have never owned a Camco kit and they don't seem to come up much, so I think I'm going to try to get it. If I can get away with only giving up one cymbal, I'm going to do the deal.

I think you're doing the right thing. The Ludwigs are decent, but not pristine. The Camco's aren't perfect, but typical vintage mods and a much cooler set with history. Always more Luddies on the horizon. I'm in the same position on an RK set. I need to give up a set to make room. But, I've always wanted to try a set of these. I think of it as "catch and release".

There is no evidence what so ever, that the Chanute 6ply Jasper era drums are less valuable, only the opinion(s) of 1 or 2. Which in my eyes, is absolutely worthless.

You are in luck! I've got a Chanute kit at Oaklawn prices just for you Cool1

+1I wouldn't do this one. Those Pearl mounts are seriously fuggly. They ruin perfectly good drums.

What is it with the whining about the Pearl mounts? Most of the time, they were replacing mounts that never worked well from new! Have you ever used the Camco mount? They sucked!! So do mosy vintage mounts. And *all* the new mounts are bulky and ugly. The only mount I see as elegant is the classic rail mount. My Dayton Rogers had the Pearl done when I bought them. Was planning on refitting a Swivo, then I played one. Never mind! Bouncy all over the place. But it looked nice. I added a RIMS to make up from the dulling effect. But all you purists whining "oh,we hates it, yes we does" {in Gollum voice.} They work, they stay in place, and have Memorilocks.plus, I hang a ride off the other hole, and lose a stand outta the bag! Show me a modern mount that's any smaller and more elegant. Tama, no. yamaha, no, with that gargantuan platform they throw in. I almost bought a Mapex kit last week, then looked at the mount. Easily rivals Tama Starship Enterprise mount from the 80's. Give us an example of and elegant mount, please. I've yet to find one. Just use them because I really like the tom on the bass.....

I'll chalk all that up to being up late and suffering a bit from sleep deprivation.

No big deal.

We all have opinions. We sway this way on the subject of child rearing ... that way on red meat consumption. We are Right Wingers ... we are Left and proud.

Honestly, does it really make a difference what someone thinks about a particular mount? Will it impact the rising and setting of the sun?

The Pearl Mounts are great for some. And for others, not so great.

You fall into the first category.

I fall into the latter category. It's really that simple. No big deal.

Take care and keep smiling. :)

On the subject of mounts, I bought a Fibes kit a few years ago, all chrome steel, it had pearl mounts on it, this has been my gigging kit for 2 years now, reason is, it has a big fat loud thundering sound with fiberglass shells. I hit hard, and it sounds fantastic, do you think I could be playing it with the original mounts? Hell no. I bought it as a players kit, and using as such.

JR, still waiting to hear from you

Nah. California time.

[Honestly, does it really make a difference what someone thinks about a particular mount?]

Oh?

Correct.

Now - [Give us an example of and elegant mount, please. I've yet to find one. Just use them because I really like the tom on the bass.....]

Still would like to see examples of an elegant mount. People complain about the Pearls, but solutions would be better!

I've got a '70's Gretsch project kit I bought that I'm either varnishing, or rewrapping, and would love to put a nice system on it. As it is, I'm planning on a snare stand, going for the "Charlie Watts tribute kit". Not a replica, but pay some homage....

Cool kit! They must sound great!

The Fibes mounts were maybe the worst. There's a reason they changed it out! Maybe someone has a better solution, but you're way better off then you would have been with the Fibes POS.

I think that is the best way to go... Camco's are MUCH less available than Ludwig's... face it, EVERYBODY and their uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews had a Ludwig kit in those days. I know, I was there. There is maybe one Camco kit for every twenty five or thirty (probably many more) Ludwig kit. The odds of finding a nice, playable Camco kit are much, much less than a Ludwig. Ludwig's are easily replaceable.

Now, on to my past and future rant... there is a reason that folks back then changed mounting hardware, spurs, etc... mostly because so much of it was horrid, awful stuff. It didn't work, the bass drum walked all over the stage, the rack tom bounced up and down more than silicon Sally dancing down in front of the stage. Camco's tree, or tom mounts are one of the most poorly designed things I've seen. My kit came with the original, and no extra holes, but I've never used it except for pictures. I put rim mounts on the rack toms and always hang the rack toms off of a cymbal stand with the Camco kit. The spurs do work fine, unlike the original Ludwig spurs of the 60's.

I'm with you there! The arc spurs were such an improvement.
