Champagne Sparkle or Silver Sparkle???? Last viewed: 52 seconds ago

From DolFan54

I had a 1961 Rogers kit is silver sparkle (glass glitter). I had a 10" tom wrapped in what I believe was called vintage Silver Glass Glitter and it was a perfect match to the kit. And my kit looked the same as yours as far as color goes.

thank you DolFan! I'll make a little list of everything I should get samples of to see what's best.

17 with a kit like that! Good on you sir, and if I may say, hold on to em for dear life, never ever sell unless you absolutely have to...[/old man advice.]

Oh no kidding, that's not even the best part... the kit has a second 12" tom I've currently got taken apart for cleaning and a matching 5x14 wood Dynasonic snare, all an original kit that came from Cleveland in 1965 : ) You can bet your bottom dollar I'm never getting rid of this kit, it's my baby!

I emailed Precision yesterday and sent them the pictures I posted above, the guy Gary recommended silver glass glitter, so I asked for samples of that, pewter glitter, and ginger glitter. I'll see how those compare, but I'll keep an eye out for Vintage Nickel Sparkle too, I'll give Jammin Sam a call too to see what they may have.

The 12x15 marching snare came in the mail yesterday and, to my surprise, it's the same sparkle as my kit! The pictures made it look like a faded black sparkle, but it's actually just a REALLY dark ginger sparkle. I'll post some pictures later but I think I'm gonna keep the original wrap on it, it's still very tight on the shell with no bubbles or anything (besides a chip in the wrap along the snare side bearing edge. Pictures later!

Update time! Finally got some pictures of the marching snare taken today. I did very little cleaning of the shell itself, I took the lugs off and had them take a bath with some Dawn overnight and they cleaned up really well, just some chrome polish and they'll look brand spankin' new. All of them are cracked at the bottom, but are repairable using the epoxy repair method I read the other day. The drum came with the lugs, the top hoop, and two tension rods; no snare hardware or bottom hoop. I'm not too concerned about the lack of snare parts right now as I just plan to use it as a tom. I found a 70's Ludwig 15" hoop I picked up for $5 that cleaned up looks new as well.

Obviously, since the bottom hoop was missing, the bottom was a bit nasty and had some mold on it, which I cleaned off. The bottom bearing edge is actually really nice despite the filthiness of it. The top edge looks stunning, though - it came with the original batter head which I bet hasn't been off in years. I couldn't find any way to date a Yorktown snare on here; could anybody date it for me using the serial number? Obviously pre-1964 Cleveland era, just curious if I can pinpoint a specific year to it. I'll attach a pic of the paper tag below.

Anybody have a suggestion how to clean the shell? I'd like to get off as much gunk as possible and make it shine. I know I'm not gonna get the actual color of the sparkle to brighten up to match my kit, I just wanna make it as clean and new-looking as possible.

Here are the pictures!

Those aren't cracks in the lugs, it's the reflection of the bricks onto it!

I have returned with more questions than updates this time lol

So I'm taking the lugs off of the Big R era 24" kick drum I bought in preparation to rewrap it in the silver sparkle, and it is a b****-and-a-half unscrewing the screws to take the lugs off. I did get a few off and I guess the age just locked the threading up, making it hard to turn again. I do have two cases of cracks under the screws in the shell. Do you guys think it could have been dropped? Or would those cracks be from the screws being on too tight? Thoughts?

Next question, I noticed the interior paint has some running down the inside of the shell. Is this something that could happen out of the factory? Or was it repainted at some time and the running of the paint is the result of that? I appreciate all your guys' help on here, I've learned so much already. Progress is happening, slowly but surely :)

That looks more like a sloppy glue and drill job to me.

Not surprising considering some of the work to come out of the big drum shops back in the 70's. DOH

What macrOw said. They blew out the interior drilling too forcefully. Don't waste any time on the slots, get a socket on those screws, and give it a micro-turn *tighter* before loosening. Good stuff...

Excellent! Thank you guys for the info on that, I'll get to fixing that crack as soon as possible and continue on with the process. I want swiv-o-matic hardware on that kick instead of the memriloc hardware on there now, so my goal is to replace that as well. I don't need to do any hunting for parts as the person I bought my silver sparkle Rogers kit from gave me a bag full of Cleveland era mounts and script badges, this is gonna turn out really well Walking

Trying to juggle this with homework, college apps, and a social life... I need more than 24 hours in a day!

Didn't have school today and had some down time after completing my Common App online to see what headlight restorer would do to the marching snare. It definitely brought out some depth in the sparkle, although it didn't get any brighter (which I wasn't expecting it would do). Being a marching snare I'm assuming it was outside so much it just darkened from the UV light. I polished the shell inbetween the two lugs with the ear plugs in the lug holes, from batter side to reso side. Let me know what ch'yall think!
