Circa 1976/77 Slingerland Brown Aztec 5 PC Set - What to do? Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Loading...

I purchased this set NEW off the music store floor in December of 1977 just after getting married.

Brown Aztec Wraps

22" Kick

16" Floor Tom Tom

12" and 13" Tom;s Tom's mounted on a T-shaped Set-O-Matic mount.

The 14" snare is Chrome plated with a Zoomatic strainer.

All have their original heads which are in good condition.

About 5 years a go I cleaned the Kick's front head and applied a new vinyl Slingerland Logo. They could all use a thorough cleaning (and possibly some minor restoration) but overall they are in great shape - no dents, no holes, no damage.

These are the only drums I have ever owned. I have played and enjoyed them on and off over the years but it is time to part with them.

So let me get to the point. How rare is this set and therefore how historically significant and/or valuable are they? Just because I have never seen another set like them means very little. :-)

Is there enough value here to warrant a complete refurbishment to make them salable to a collector? Should I sell them to a collector as-is? Take them to the Music-go-round? Or do they go in the thrifty's so some eager 5th grader can pound on them and drive his parents nuts?!

I am just looking to do the right thing here - any advice will be appreciated.

I would HATE to see them end up getting trashed if they are of significant historical value ...

If pictures would help I can make them available upon request. (They are in storage at the moment)

Thanks in advance

JD

[COLOR="Navy"]JohnDavidDean:

The Slingerland Aztecs are very rare indeed, only officially offered in 1976. The Aztec finishes were not popular, and Slingerland discontinued them very quickly. As a result today they are rare collectors' items with strong vintage value. Of course not every drummer wants them, but there are definitely collectors who do. Due to their historical value it would be great if you could get them to someone who would appreciate them.

And of course, if you could share pictures and specifications with folks here, that would be wonderful.

I would strongly advise you to sell those drums to me for far less than they're worth.

That kit is the same as listed on ebay, so he is possibly running conflicting auctions.

So here is a link to the pics of my Brown Aztec tubs.

Each drum has 4 pics - profile - top head - bottom head - and S/N badge.

These are all original heads - 33 years old now and still going.Walking

If you keep clicking on the images, you will get to a very high resolution version. Good enough to read the S/N's on the badges.

I now know that his model was known as the Rock Outfit #50N featuring 8"x12" and 9"x13" mounted toms, a 16"x 16" floor tom and a 14" x 22" bass drum. My 14" snare is Chrome plated with a Zoomatic strainer.

I also posted pics of my Slingerland logo hi-hat stand. I never owned the matching logo kick pedal.

If I sell these I would like to sell the whole shebang, including the cases, my cymbals, throne, and all my traps.

PM me if interested - serious inquires only.
