Club Date Rewrap Last viewed: 2 minutes ago

From fishaa

I believe burgundy is the same price as red sparkle at Precision.

Yep! I just re-wrapped a 50's round badge kit in the 'new' version of Burgundy Sparkle. It's now called, 'Merlot' - just like the wine. It is slightly different than the vintage Burgundy, but in a better way. It's a deeper, darker color with bright sparkles and just more rich looking than the old stuff. The vintage burgundy looks dull next to the new stuff. Highly recommended. Check the photo of my kit (below) if you want to see what it looks like on the drums.

Re: Black Galaxy... It's a proprietary Ludwig finish. There are only two dealers in the country that are authorized to sell only -new- kits in that finish. Exclusive contracts exist between; Delmar, Ludwig and two dealers. The wrap is not available anywhere else. Delmar did a limited run of the wrap and it's -all- at the Ludwig factory. Forget Black Galaxy unless you plan to order a new kit from one of the dealers offering it.

I have been thinking if I ever wrap another kit possibly red, or Green Sparkle or Red, or Green Glass Glitter. I love the Red Glass Glitter. Sam Bernard disuaded me from the red glass glitter when I wraped my Slingerlands. That was my first choice. He said it was difficult to work with and that the wrap was the thickness of 3 credit cards.

Plus it was my first rewrap and I probably needed more experience. I ended up going with the vintage sky blue pearl. So the guy was not just trying to make a buck off me as the glass is a bit more expensive. I do know that the glass glitter is georgous. So I vote Red or Green Glass Glitter. and I also wish they sold Black Galaxy. I like that too.

Purdie! You have a very beautiful drum kit there.

I have to agree that the glass glitter options (and some sparkles for that matter) are very tempting because they look absolutely amazing! Purdie's burgundy (merlot) sparkle kit... Simply awesome, enough said! On another note, I'm surprised that good old WMP wasn't mentioned more. That's always a great classic finish as well. Plus, it seems there's always a special on it (well, one of the many versions). Precision has 'white blue pearl' for a great price right now. I think Sam's usually has a WMP special as well. I know that many of the versions don't match the vintage style WMP. Any experience or input in this regard? Also, how common was WMP on club dates? I've seen them around, but not many at all.

My one experience with new wrap was from sam and it was his vintage white pearl. I was going to get the white pearl special but he said that wrap is kinda thin and does not recomend it if you are going to be gigging the drums. And the vintage white pearl was more correct for my Slingerland. The pearl special is more like a Ludwig wrap.

I probably would not just tape the wrap on if I do this again. I found it hard to get the wrap pulled around tight against the shell. I was afraid of drill shavings getting between the shell and wrap. One of the drums the wrap ws a little loose and when I went to drill the holes it moved on me a little and by the time I had drilled the last set of holes the ones I started with were off a hair. Not bad enough to cause a major problem but made me mad.

One of the members that builds and wraps drums all the time told me he thinks sam has a better quality wrap than precission, Im sure we will here different from others but this came from a very well respected member who guys have bought drums from.

All in all I am getting to like my newly wrapped Slingerland kit. At first I was not crazy about it because it was too new looking. I am used to the old vintage wraps and like them better for some reason. Here is a pic of the Slingerlands, hope this has helped. Its very hard to decide what wrap. Maybe you should do what John did and choose four of them and then let your wife make the final decision.

Have a nice weekend!

To add to Jeff's comments on the White Pearl…

We offer three types of Marine pearls in a standard “White Pearl”,” an Aged Pearl” for a slightly yellowed look to show some age on the drums and then the “Vintage Pearl” which is even darker and looks like your drums have been sitting in a smokey club for a few years. This can give you the option of a traditional pearl kit in a clean new finish with a pre aged look.

Hope this helps,

John

If the wrap was offered, you could get any color. Even Physc Red, Citrus Mod and Mod Orange. John Densmore plays a Club Date kit in Mod Orange... since that is the color he used with the Doors, it may be a re-wrap, doubt it though.

All of the sparkles look good, red being my favorite. I did a Club Date kit but used a non original color... Turquoise Sparkle. Since it will be a "players kit", make it what you want. I added a second 12x8 tom without butchering the kit.

Glass Glitter is very tough to work with but if you have help and more than one wrap job under your belt, it shouldn't be a problem. The key is to keep the wrap warm and pliable. Also wear a mask when doing and trim work with a Dremel or anything that will create dust. The dust is really nasty stuff.

Sorry to step somewhat off topic, but I have done some tape jobs on snares. I would also recommend glue, however to improve the issue you had JC, I found that installing the lugs as I drilled the holes really tightened up the wrap. It was much better than drilling all the holes first.

Good idea! take it one step further, Install lugs as you go before you bond the wrap together. Maybe keep the last two lugs off but that would really hold it tight to the shell as you go. Great idea! I would do that, I dont think the glue has any other advantage.

And Im sorry also for getting off topic, did not want to start a fight over tape and glue.

Have you decided on a wrap?

Thanks for the comments guys.

JC - I'll be requesting wrap samples on Monday. I'll keep you posted.

So, this exercise has made me come to the conclusion that I should just go ahead and choose what I like regardless if it was a catalog color or not. Yes, I know, I know, most of you told me so. It's a player's kit anyway and will always be a rewrap, so might as well be what I like. Red sparkle / glitter are on the list and are the front runners at this point. I'm ordering others, so the final choice might change based on that. My current choice is to glue, but that could change as well. My only concern with the tape method on a club date is that with the center mounted lugs, there's not much holding the wrap in place.
