Club Date Rewrap Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Club Dates are wonderful drums and red sparkle or glitter both will look smashing.

I did a full restoration once and wrapped them in green sparkle.

I'm currently doing a second Club Date restoration and decided to go for Gold Sparkle.

Success with the project !

You got it.... use any wrap color you like.

The glue method is the only way to go... seriously. Excellent thought process about just a center lug. Do it the right way the first time. I have wrapped many kits and never had a failure. Stopping under a lug isn't a great idea either... go past it by an inch. It will buckle with time... just be sure to scuff the back side and where it's going to land well and glue.

If you want to factor in resale then I would use the vintage Black Oyster Pearl. Yeah, I know it's almost become boring but people will dial down the non-original talk on a good BOP wrap.

If Mod Orange was still available, I would use that in a heartbeat.

If you like the look of a canister throne, be sure to buy enough wrap for it. You can make one easily from a drop of PVC pipe. I have one for looks, I will play for maybe a 1/2 hour using it but no more. Makes you wonder how drummers could sit on those uncomfotable thrones for hours...

From Jckludwig

I don't see why this would discourage people. He is looking to wrap in a wrap like they used in the 60s and asking for knowledge on what was popular back then. Am I missing something. I think vintage drum guide has the ludwig finishes listed from that time period. You've basically got all the sparkles, plus the oysters and wmp. I love a club date in a blue or champaign sparkle. Wmp is nice too

Oops, my mistake. I read it "not an original idea", as opposed to an originally offered finish. My apologies, Mspartacus.

Stedi - Great looking kit! Thanks for the encouragement, and good luck with your project as well - I bet the gold sparkle will look incredible. You always have great looking kits Bowing

back_beat - Thanks for the comments and suggestions. I completely agree on the oyster black, but I already have an original kit in that finish, and I'm not overly concerned about resale on this one as I'll be keeping it for myself. I also like that cannister throne idea! What did you use for the seat itself?

Ron - No worries... water under the bridge.

So, I ordered the wrap samples today and I'm excited to get them Excited

Sooo... In a bit of a strange twist of fate, I scored an early 60's Downbeat kit today that could use some tlc. The shells were stripped and rewrapped in black sometime long ago, but the kit is complete and all the hardware is there except for some bits and pieces that I'm sure I'll find in my parts bin. There are also a couple of holes to fill. So, all things being equal in terms of sizes (12, 14, 20), which one should I rewrap and restore - the Club Date or the Downbeat?? If I do the Downbeat, I have a 16" shell kicking around that I'd wrap up and add to it (I think that would be sweet). That said, so far I think I'm still leaning towards Club Date. What do you guys think?

To make a simple and cost effective canister throne, schedule 40 PVC pipe, cut 2 3/4" pieces of plywood. One that fits inside the tube for the bottom and one that fits the outside diameter of the tube. You will have to cut a third that fits the inside diameter for the seat to rest on or three blocks works well too.

Just use 2" foam and vinyl/Naugahyde of your choice and staple it to the wood going over the foam. The originals had three latches on them, you can use just two but I would use three. If you need closeup shots of the latches, I can take some pics for you. Two just mesh and one is a real latch.

I would definitely do BOP on the Down Beat kit... I read where you have an original but..... I would check everywhere for Mod Orange wrap. Or Precision does the printed wrap... Top Hat & Cane would be very cool.

The Clubdates.... probably silver sparkle.

Look in the gallery and you will see the Down Beat kit I wrapped in Red Sparkle, that will give you a good idea of what they will look like.

JC - Yes, I'd LOVE to do both, and I will in due time. Doing both immediately might be a bit cost prohibitive, so I'll have to decide on which one to do first.

back_beat - I'd love to see more details on your cannister throne. Maybe a separate thread with some pics? I have a feeling some others would be interested and they might not see it if it's contained in this thread. The OBP on the Downbeat does seem like the way to go, I must admit. That will likely be the route I go for those. I'll have a look at your red sparkles as well, and thanks for the comments.

MW - You seem to be getting right into the whole drum thing... I love it! Take it from a converted guitarist, this shiz is catchier than the flu! Enjoy Keep on Pl Clapping Happy2

Regarding Mod Orange, I noticed that Jammin' Sam has a version of this... and it's currently on sale! Has anyone seen it up close and personal? I'm thinking that this would look amazing on the Clubbies! I'm assuming it's different from the original Mod Orange in some way. Any comments?
