Check out this 70's influenced band, Fitz and the Tantrums on a recent Jay Leno appearance. The drummer has a new C&C kit with a single-headed rack tom. Could this be the start of a comeback? I've also seen this guy playing a showroom clean vintage Ludwig Standard kit.

In their case it was bottom heads and rims removed from I think a newish Ludwig, rather than the concert toms though...
Here is a man who still plays a full concert tom kit! He has played concert toms almost for his entire run as a drummer. If you listen closely to the clip, they actually sound excellent.
