Concert Toms .com! Last viewed: 3 hours ago

My site's been up for a little while, but I decided to make it official by grabbing http://www.concerttoms.com Actually, I'm a little surprised the name was available, I thought every combination of words/letters .com had been bought up by now!

Anyway, with both Dunnett and Gretsch displaying concert toms at NAMM (following Tama, Craviotto et al), I think they're a sound whose time has come back. I'll be using my Jenkins-Martin Blaemire concert toms on an upcoming Al track for the new album!

Enjoy!

Bermuda,

I tried going to your site but all I get is a stock web page image. I can see it in my mind and it is spectacular though!

I do have a question that you may be able to answer; why are they called concert toms? My assumption is that they were originally used as orchestral percussion instruments with single headed drums being able to more accurately produce a defined note. I recall playing several orchestral and percussion ensemble pieces that called for concert toms and some of those may have specified the actual notes to which the drums should be tuned. If that is true, then the term would originate from concert band/orchestra as opposed to "rock concert" but who knows?

Now I will wander off to ponder even more useless information. Regardless, I do find these sorts of things interesting.

I just tried the link, and it worked fine for me. One of those inexplicable cloud glitches, I guess...

Bermuda, it looks really good, with great info! Will be watching for additions! Are you really Weird Al's drummer? Wow... I'm talking to a celebrity! :)

tsquint, IMO you did a good job of answering your own question. That has always been my assumption as well. In fact, if I'm not mistaken the drum companies are actually responsible for the name, because I remember when Ludwig's "Octa-plus" came out in their 1975 catalog (boy, did I drool over them!), officially they called them "Melodic Toms" because they could be tuned, and they had the same toms available as "concert toms" as part of their educational line.

As much as I've been into "set" drumming, my early background of course was marching band/symphonic band (small school, no orchestra 'til college) and I was into that just as much. I remember those things you described as well.

BTW Scott -- those heads are getting good use! Again, thanks!

Great site. Site comes up fine on my IPad. Very easy to navigate. I really like the gallery's. Bermuda, have you considered a gallery for those of us who use concert toms to submit images of their kits?

Wow.....Great looking site John. There are also several (many!) of us who removed the reso heads, back in the day, and now have some regrets for damaging the edges of some sweet vintage sets. Somewhere there is a 68 club date in champagne sparkle with a 2 hoops, T-rods in a box, and a 14 inch hole cut into the origin BD logo head.......I apologize.
