Concert Toms .com! Last viewed: 0 seconds ago
What a cool page! Even more than before, I'm hoping in obtaining some concert toms form my acrylic concert Amati bassdrum.
This really neatly clicks in with Jespo's jungle kit made of Slingy concert toms in the Questlove's Breakbeats thread!

You may be on to something bermuda. The last two issues of Modern Drummer Have had a two page add with Taylor Hawkins playing a Gretsch concert tom kit. When I was a kid I wanted a huge concert tom kit just like Peter Criss's...maybe it's time.
Great site!

I do have a question that you may be able to answer; why are they called concert toms? My assumption is that they were originally used as orchestral percussion instruments with single headed drums being able to more accurately produce a defined note. I recall playing several orchestral and percussion ensemble pieces that called for concert toms and some of those may have specified the actual notes to which the drums should be tuned. If that is true, then the term would originate from concert band/orchestra as opposed to "rock concert" but who knows?
Correct. The term "concert" stemmed from the orchestral use of the single-headed melodic toms. While every company called their single-headed toms "melodic" toms, I believe Ludwig was the first to use the term "concert toms" in their 1960 catalog.
I should probably do a FAQ on the site, I alsoi have some cool Hal info that's not readily available. :)

Awesome site Bermuda!! The site couldn't come at a better time. Just picked up a mid-70's Slingerland Concert tom kit. Love the sound and look. Can't wait to play it out.
Question for all: Can anyone list a few tunes that Hal Blaine played on that showcase his large concert tom kit?
Thanks!!
Carpenters "Close To You"
Jon really cool site. I spent a good hour reading and drooling over all those kits. Great history lesson too thanks!

Will be adding a FAQ today with a list of song examples, several of which are Hal.

Thanks Bermuda that's a wonderfully informative and very cool website.
I already learned a few things I was unaware of. That Karen Carpenter appeared to be more of a serious drummer that I've been lead to believe, with those two gorgeous Ludwig kits. I've always loved her voice but know little about her drumming. Also, I am perplexed at the massively big drum kit of Jeremy Esposito's used on Judy Collins' "Judith" tour around 1976. Judy Collins the folkie needed that kind of kit? She may have went 'electric' like Dylan at that point, but really? Anyway, great site!
