do recut bearing edges affect value? Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Dear VDF gurus,

I am considering purchasing a early 70s 4 piece Slingerland kit that has had the bearing edges recut (acording to the seller the drums had no edges on them and they sounded so bad).

Does that bring the value down?

Thanks.

It indeed does affect the value.

Why?

I have not seen the kit in person yet, nor heard any audio of it.

The wraps (black diamond pearl) and chrome look good in the pics and he listed the hardware items that he has replaced.

My understanding is that any modifications, even to improve the bearing edges from a previous not-so-great state, affects the value of the vintage set for those who are especially looking for collector kits rather then so-called "player" kits.

If you're looking to play it, and aren't worried about this mod, then you should consider buying it ... unless the re-cut edges weren't done properly and sound like a dinosaur buried in mud.

This is something that I have never thought of when purchasing drums before.

He says that they sound great and his asking price for the set (2 toms, 1 fl tom and bass) is $500.

I am looking more for a player kit.

Go & check them out. That'll only cost you in time. Without any pics it's hard to say much else //

You bet re-cut edges affects the value! It's an irreversible alteration. Also, it changes the dimension of the drums. I've seen drums with re-cut edges that were a half an inch shorter than they were supposed to be! And if the edges are re-cut to a modern shaped profile, then forget it ever sounding like it's supposed to sound.

About the only time to re-cut bearing edges is when the owner is planning on keeping the drums. Re-selling them as such will be very difficult -at least selling them to any knowledgable vintage guy.

If you can buy that kit for $500. I suggest you buy it and play it. Why would you want to own a drum and not play it?
