Just wondered how many of you guys use double kick pedals. I kind of want one but they are expensive and Im not sure if I have what it takes to use one. How is it used, is it just for fills and solo's or are you using it all of the time? They do look fun!

Dbl. pedal offers the 'option' to use both pedals if you want to. The learning process to work two pedals is the same as for one... practice, practice, practice. I'm not a fan, but you can learn to do some really cool sounding stuff on a dbl. pedal. You don't have to use the second pedal all the time, only when you want, or need to. If it turns out you don't like it, or the learning curve is too steep, you can always go back to a single pedal. I say go for it and see if you like it or not.

:eek:I don't play double pedals but I just had one of my students ask me about learning to play one. So yesterday we hooked up a double pedal and I was fortunately able to do pretty good on one. Single and triplet patterns with a beat. So that's how I started him out.
After the lesson his Mother bought him the pedal so now I am thinking, what if some other kids want to learn dbl pedal bass. Of course the beginners will have to learn to play single pedal until they are proficient at that. So now I am thinking I may need to get one and sharpen up on it. Not crazy about the idea but have to be prepared I guess. As long as I can stay ahead of my students on one. This never even occurred to me when I started teaching again.
at 1st I got one because after my 2nd music set...my right leg (pedal leg) really starts to get sore and cramps up from time to time and I have to straighten my leg out...
So my wife mentioned to me....why not get a dble pedal....& when my leg gets sore ...just use my left leg (foot)...
so now that's what I do...I extend my right leg between the flr tom and bass to stretch it out....drop the auto clutch on my hats and use my left foot for the regular songs that don't require to much tricky pedal work...
It really helps me out...
I sold my dw5000 dble a year ago...
and as of yesterday...just got a dw9000 dble...man o man...I got it 2nd hand for $250..
The Best pedal I have ever owned ...PERIOD.
plus I just started to use the left footboard ...(I put (1) of the beaters from the main pedal...back into the left board and use it to trigger a electoric pad that is set as an effect cym or a supper lowend bassdrum sound...its getting better and better..lol

In my opinion, double pedals are fun to play so long as the player isn't using it as a crutch. It is more important to play a single pedal well.
It also comes down to the style of music you play also. If you are playing blues, classic rock, country, etc. there really isnt a practical need for one because that style typically doesnt call for a dbl pedal. In those situations, playing a double pedal would be sort of overkill.
Now, if you are starting to play a more heavier style of music, then I'd say get one. I used to have a double pedal a long time ago when i was playing more modern kits. At one time, I played in a metal band and also really enjoyed playing along to Tool albums. With that, a double pedal is a must. Danny Carey's playing with Tool is absolutely phenomenal! check him out if you haven't.

I worry about the crutch factor, as well, and often ignore the 2nd pedal during the odd rehearsal. I have an axis longboard (big $, but they all are) which I really like, but have used iron cobra and dw's and found them to be great.

Thanks for the reply's!
Oddball, I was referring to a single bass drum kit, not a double bass kit.
The idea of using it for a crutch did enter my mind, and the kick is my weak spot. I think its awesome to hear a drummer play really fast beats on the kick and then discover he is not playing a double pedal. So for now, I think I will wait for a while, save my money. I need a nice throne first anyway.
If you recall, my first kit that I restored was a Ludwig Rocker kit with two kick drums and two speed kings. I have half of that kit set up in our practice room. I am taking my Slingerlands to practice tonight and will swap out kits. So I think I will set up the double bass Rockers again and play with that. The only gripe I have, and this is why I gave up on the double kick, was that I could not get the two bass drums tuned alike. So a double pedal was my solution to that problem, not to mention one less bass drum to haul to a gig.
Thanks again!

Funny I was just going to post a thread about this, but with a little twist, what difference have you all experience with a direct drive vs chain drive on these DP's? I do use one, (or should say have one mounted) if for no other reason it's really handy for explosive scramble egg endings, you can make some nice thunder with a DB at the end of songs, which is when I mostly use it.
I play a vintage Yamaha (same one that Neal P used in Rush) its a double chain system. I wondered if the action on a newer pedal would enable me to use it more>?????
would like feedback on the drive systems anyone can share....
