Thanks for the reply's!Oddball, I was referring to a single bass drum kit, not a double bass kit.The idea of using it for a crutch did enter my mind, and the kick is my weak spot. I think its awesome to hear a drummer play really fast beats on the kick and then discover he is not playing a double pedal. So for now, I think I will wait for a while, save my money. I need a nice throne first anyway. If you recall, my first kit that I restored was a Ludwig Rocker kit with two kick drums and two speed kings. I have half of that kit set up in our practice room. I am taking my Slingerlands to practice tonight and will swap out kits. So I think I will set up the double bass Rockers again and play with that. The only gripe I have, and this is why I gave up on the double kick, was that I could not get the two bass drums tuned alike. So a double pedal was my solution to that problem, not to mention one less bass drum to haul to a gig. Thanks again!

That`s where I can have it out with a few guys,.... You don`t want both bass drums to sound exactly the same.

I don`t like....Boom..Boom, Boom..Boom, Boom..Boom, Boom..Boom, Boom..Boom,

I like .... Boom..Ba, Boom..Ba, Boom..Ba, Boom..Ba, Boom..Ba, When using two bass drums.

You can also put a felt on one beater and a rubber on the other beater to get different pitch from one bass drum.

This topic can go for years.

Double bass drums are the only way to fly, example 2 floor toms do you want them both the same? and same tuning? NO 14x14 and 16x16 or 16x18 that works so do two different bass drums preferably different sizes as well 14x20 and 14x22 or 22 and 24 you can play so many different rhythms with two bass drums . A double pedal is a modern gimmick it is supposed to take the place of two bass drums but it does NOT do it it sounds the same and you loose the effect of the different sounds... Ginger Baker is probably one of the best at getting different sounds from his bass drums and he always played two different sizes....

I would say for the most part, no. We play classic rock and some blues. But as Gary described the "scrambled egg endings", it would be worth it just for that. I really like to open the hats a lot too so if I were to get one I sure would not be using it much.

So, Im thinking I will get the double bass kit back together, and not worry about tuning the two bass drums alike, thanks for the advice Odball. But when I have some extra cash and see a used one for a good price I think I will jump on it. The last issue I have is when I had the double kick set up, the two speed kings had a different feel. I really need to tear them down and get them working properly. I bought two of the cheep Iron Cobra's to fix that problem but ended up selling one with a kit. So now the other Iron Cobra is my go to pedal for my home kit. The double Iron Cobra is only like 170.00 brand new so that might be a good choice for this experiment.

Thanks to all replies!

Thank you!

The only drums you want to sound the same are your ear drums. Other wise we would all play one drum.

Timely subject for me Jeff. I have been looking at DB pedals also. I'm looking at the Iron Cobra 200 pedals for $180 and 600 pedals $250. The 200 has a single chain and also has 2 little nylon wheel bushings where the 2 tension springs are. The 600 has a double chain and looks like a more beefy bearings in place of those nylon wheels. I have seen those nylon bushings wear out and break. Maybe the metal bushing from the 600 might fit the 200 if and when they do? The IC900R and DW9000 series are really nice buy way out of my league price wise. Unless I see something used like Kelly found (nice score btw!) so we'll see. Keep us posted on what you find.
