From mcdrummer

I used to play at an open mic at a "jamhole" of sorts where musicians of all levels were encouraged to participate and the rule was 2 songs per musician or group, unless invited to play more. Because a player with no groove is much worse than a hard hitter. So if you fit-in you might get asked to play more songs and if you sucked or were just too loud or simply a beginner then you got a chance to play 2 songs and then listen to other musicians and maybe pick up on what they were doing right so when you come back maybe you might improve. Or not.

Man what a bunch of elitist's so first you suck a little less if you are a hard hitter, check, and if you were to loud then you sucked less and you might be playing wrong so if you listen to the dude banging out Koomb Bye Ya then you might get better..... OooooooooKay! got it.... someone is on the >>>>.Soap Box

Awhhhhhhhh.....

I do open mics here in Toronto...

It's all the same....

Someone in charge is best...

Don't let the acoustic boys run the show...period.!

Have an open mic jam for all...talented musicians can play with others...

Otherwise you have to listen to someone (just starting out) play a broken down version of a crowd killing song ...once you've lost the crowd...who's left. ! These are usually the guys who will take 10mins to set up for 2songs

And will turn around and say....( I don't need drums, Thxs).... Lololol... Usually because they can't keep a tempo, and don't want to be called out on it, by playing with others...!!

Oh, man, can I rant on this All nite long..

Sorry, I just picked a scab, let the bleeding start..Yes Sir

I Play a 14" Remo Key Tuned Djembe at our acoustic circle and have had it mike for plugged in acoustic, and works fabulous!

From Brewkowski

Ok.. this option is sort of out in left field, I know. but, have you thought of maybe a few conga drums, or bongos, or other shakers, rattlers, tamborines, etc. for the acoustic portion of the jam? I know that sometimes when players intend to play solely acoustic, they would rather a drummer sit out from the kit, or play accessory percussion instruments. I have done small coffee shop gigs before, using a late 40's kit and brushes and/or Promark lightning rods (I think they call them that).. worked just fine. Key is, will the drummer playing with those fellas have the discipline to know to play very soft.

I need to make any drummer that gets up on a plugged in acoustic set read all this!

From Riddim

I don't agree with Ronn Dunnett on all that he says, but this line - "There are no loud drums" - has a lot of truth to it. Develop your touch. Learn to burn at low volumes. If you know how to yell already, try whispering. People listen more intently when one speaks softly.

I can handle the being in charge thing. It my place and my drums, mics, pa, etc....... A DRUMMER LISTENS MORE THAN HE PLAYS! Dynamics, dynamics, dynamics!!!The evans onyx black heads seem to be quiter than the Evans G2. There will also be some full plugged in electric guitar music going on oin there. Aside from drummers playing to suit the room and particular song they are sitting in on (which you'll have no control over) generally speaking, drums with rounder bearing edges will be a quieter instrument.
