Fighting burnout... Last viewed: 6 hours ago

Loading...

I admit it- sometimes, my band burns me out. I want badly to gig. We have been taking it in baby steps. I sometimes feel that my playing doesn't evolve. I also just want to STFU and play, rather than do three hours worth of guitargasms and "compose" songs. Don't get me wrong- I AM a song writer (check my myspace page: www.myspace.com/dougrogers if in doubt), but I get frustrated all the same...

But I was off work early today (not necessarily by choice). I used the time wisely. My first jam (early this morning) was lackluster. This afternoon, I felt like after some dullness, I finally was polishing technique. I was finding stuff I haven't heard from my sticks in a LONG TIME. Yeah, I have been back for a couple of years; but I haven't been back like this...

Who here has gone through this?

If the band is serious about gigging;

1. Create a set-list

2. Rehearse set-list. (To death, until you can play it all in your sleep.)

3. Have somebody actively booking gigs for the band. It's hard and takes a lot of commitment.

Band rehearsals should be just that; rehearsing the set-list as if you were doing an actual gig. Everybody needs to be focused. It sounds like the bands' time is being squandered. That's where your boredom/frustration is coming from. Just start acting like pro's and soon enough you will be pro's. Just unstructured, random 'jamming' is not going to turn you into a working band. Fix that and you'll fix your attitude at the same time. Everybody has to get serious or it ain't going to happen. In case you don't know... it's tough to line up -any- paying gigs these days. If you do get one, the band needs to be ready to deliver a show/music. A 'working band' is a business. Sounds like everybody is showing up for work and then not doing any 'work.'

Best of luck, hope you get your mojo for the music back...

John-

The last couple of rehearsals were closer to the ideal that you posted; however, the "king" of the band doesn't like some of the material (most of which he wrote) and wants to re-work it. I have told him that we are so thin on material that we should just do the songs and add at least two per week. He's already talking about being tired of some of the songs, where I say the following: "_place name here_, we should be playing these songs so well that we despise them!!! We're not supposed to like the songs, we are supposed to play them consistently and with precision".

The problem is that we are doing original material. I feel like I am in some dude's rock 'n roll fantasy camp. Hell- he unilaterally rented a hall (from a guy whom I was in a band with and it ended BADLY) for our first "gig" (yes- we were going to be on the hook for $50 each) which was going to be a Halloween party/coming out. I wasn't happy. Thank G'd the place had water damage and the party had to be cancelled!!!

Sorry for the long rant. Thanks for your input and I look forward to more.

To clarify what Rogersling tried to unfairly characterise with personal attacks, here's the facts:

1) We've been working on the same songs since May

2) The "King" of the band has been making unilateral decisions

3) The "King" takes a dictatorial stance when it comes to song selection

4) The "King" admittedly takes over at our practises and will spend hours upon hours on guitar solos.

5) The "King" also admits that he gets too dictatorial, just doesn't know when to stop

6) I call out the "King" at least once per practise

7) The "King" is a school teacher and thusly approaches rehearsal as such

8) I have told the "King" my frustrations, so it's really no secret to him

7) The "King" and I are friends; and like brothers, we may have a row or two.

Rogersling- personal attacks really don't wear well upon you, mate.

Didn't realize these threads were directed only to certain respondents. Dang. I'll try to read for my names next time.

Look- you're the one who said you weren't talking to me on a few replies you answered with "I wasn't talking to you".

Yes, I feel you have been overly snarky with me during my tenure here.

Boys, boys! Peace in the valley, eh!

Rogersling - From experience... I found it's always better to couch criticism in general terms, stating your points in a way that makes the person they are intended for feel like you're trying to help, not point fingers. Your wording just made it sound personal and I'm not surprised at Bunny's reaction. More a matter of 'diplomacy' and 'semantics' than anything else.

Bunny - Whether positive or negative, stay 'open' to criticism. Especially any criticism that strikes home. If there wasn't 'some truth' to what Rogersling said to you, it wouldn't have chewed on you the way it did. I know when I get 'winged' it means there's something for me to look at. In that way, the negative criticism will help you more, to be better, than any positive comments. In Tibetan Buddhism it's called; 'Turning poison into good medicine!'

I was enjoying the direction the thread was taking. I hope we can get back to it. A lot of good info that may help others can come out of it. We all go through this stuff at one time or another. The info applies to everyone.

PEACE...

I have just found that Rogersling has always been snarky towards me, saying crap like "I wasn't talking to you" when I respond to some of his answers and the like, and "this thread is pickled tripe".

Sure there's truth to what Rogersling said in some ways. But- he kinda took it out of context, as well.

Yeah- my attitude stinks 'cos I feel like it's someone else's way, no highway option. I say read it all before passing judgment.

Still have no idea what you are speaking to ... but, with that said ... I sincerely apologize to you for whatever I have inadvertently said in the past that incited you such. I honestly mean no disrespect. I'm a very direct person with strong opinions ... much like most ... so, if this is what it takes, bury it here. I got no beef with any newbie on here, to include you. I've been hanging on this forum in one guise or another for quite a few years. Would love to continue sharing ideas with you and such.

I will admit that it is much harder on both our parts to understand exactly what either of us exactly means; after all- inflections, facial expressions and the like are not present.

However, I have held my figurative tongue a few times. It seemed like you would attack me as I was the newbie. You have called threads of mine "pickled tripe", which I take offense.

I turned the other cheek as many times as I could; but then again- I need to follow by the example of my Spiritual guide. So I will retreat.

After reading your explanation, I will have to take you for your literal word.

Apology accepted.

In the old days, we would have slugged the crap out of each other, and after picking up our teeth, we would have had a laugh and a beer. Unfortunately, I don't think Rog and I live quite close enough to do that. So we have to figure out how to do that in the virtual world...
