Fighting burnout... Last viewed: 3 minutes ago

From Hoppy

Sounds like this guy could use a music program like something from the Sonor X1 line.... He could create the arrangement in the software quickly enough and practice his solo ideas endlessly over it to better figure out the ideas in his head without walking you guys down burnout road. Also I would have him record the practice session then step away from the piece for a couple of weeks, then come back to it with, hmmm.... a fresher set of ears or a less critical set of ears rather than having him churning the piece over and over for perfection. What he may not realize is that time may give him better perspective on the peice and that the new ideas he is trying to incorporate (or even force in) may be better suited outside of the current piece his is working on and become whole as their own in a new song (rather than endless re-workings... it may allow him to tap into additional creative energy). He may also have to learn that sometimes you just got to let it go... The Bambino didn't hit a homerun everytime he stepped up to the plate!Wonderful idea... something like this can be quite satisfying no doubt.

As computer savvy this guy is, he relies upon his old Korg 12 track recorder!!!

I guess I get frustrated 'cos we have been working forever and only have 8 songs to show for it. Worse yet, he wants to sh** can at least one of those!!!!

As far as the cancelled gig goes? I was more angry that he made a unilateral move at a time I didn't have the cash to rent a place and didn't ask me, even though we're "equal partners"...

Sometimes he does write a new song out of the one he's polishing, but he then wants us to work on the song he re-arranges!!! It's just feeling like I am going nowhere...

I think you lot are just helping me make a decision. Thanks for your input and PLEASE feel free to give more...

Great advice Purdie Shuffler. You have insight close to that of the great philosopher, "Porgie Tierbiter".All band relationships are tough.Mine is with my brother.Good work guys. SA

I will admit to little/no experience PERSONALLY in the original band format, but my brother, with whom I am presently rehearsing a re-arranged cover band with, played original music for many years. It seemed an exersize in frustration to me,paying to play even here in the Boston area. Many many top performing bands start out by mixing rearranged covers with originals.Money in the pocket makes people happy, including club owners. And you get to work on arrangements live,in front of an audience. No one in the audience gives a CRAP about the flawless guitar solo,or drum solo,or bass solo etc.The enjoyment for the band should be derived from their ability to move the audience. The band/audience interaction is KEY.And that is achieved thru working with a live audience.

I worked some of the same rooms as Godsmack when they were starting out.And I doubt they could have played those "dance"rooms playing all original material.

This is one of the messages I have tried to nail home to the "king".

I do feel good that I am playing with musicians of the same caliber. And I will say again- the "king" is a genius; I just have to figure out how to get him to focus...

Thanks for your input.

Update:

I have decided to audition for another band. I wasn't notified that there was no band practise today!!! Yes, I showed up and was told there was no practise. I was not happy. I am tired of this type of crap. We didn't have a lead singer/bassist last week. This sh** is just silliness...

I have been burnt out for awhile; I took a month off in July, and all of the problems came right back. I've just had my fill as of today!!!!

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

The problem is that we were supposed to be gigging by now. We only have 8 songs, 13 if you count the back burnered songs. We have been together since May, and I don't think it's unreasonable to have at least one hour's worth of material by now, and having had a couple of short appearances. And that silly Halloween party where we were going to rent the place and only play for a half an hour? I am still happy that didn't happen, as I would have been on the hook for $100!!!! But the straw that broke the camel's back? Not knowing that practise was cancelled yesterday.

I am only quitting when I get another gig. I am supposed to hear back soon from somebody I had contacted last night.
