How Many of You Still Play, Collect Vinyl Records? Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Oh yes, how the vinyl would warp in hot cars, attics, sunny rooms, and even sitting under a desk lamp, and then the phono needle would bounce up and down as it passed the warp. Our solution as kids was to tape a penny to the needle cartridge and let it ride firmly across the warps like a roller coaster.

Still have all mine from the 60's and 70's.

Finally figured out how to hook up the turntable to my surround sound.

Man what a difference from listening to a CD.

i love them. i let my "growing up" collection get away from me a few years back. ive got several working turntables. ive got a collection of around 1000 or so albums i guess. they are hard to store though. at least they are for me. i really enjoy them. find most on the cheap. ive got a late 50's telefunken hymnus hi-fi right here behind me that i listen to often.

I have a few hundred LP's many of which are direct cuts & "audiofile" Mobile fidelity/Sheffield lab etc records.. I worked in the "Hi Fi" industry up until last year, so my collection is fairly extensive and kept in good order.. I have 3 turntables that I have kept in working order, 2 Duals & a Hitachi direct drive..

I also have a couple of old wind up Gramophones in working order , both of these I spent several months on restoring.. lots of old Bakelite records including Krupa, Woody Herman & the like.

Although I have not bought an album since Cd's appeared on the market, my collection seems to keep growing due to Friends , Neighbours and family gifting me their collections..

Finding the time to listen is the issue... but Sunday afternoons "Happy Hour" usually a couple of hours of something gets played.

Cheers

Glenn,Thanks for the advice, but I need to clarify that what we call our "attic" is actually just an upstairs bedroom that we store a bunch of stuff. It's temperature controlled, just like the rest of our house. The Star Wars & Star Trek collectibles, a lot of drums, and baseball cards are all up there, too... Some day I'll put it all up for sale...Bill

Hi Bill, good to hear they are in good hands then. Carry on Sir!! :D

Glenn.

Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.

Cool Thread,

This guy always comes along when take the vintage camper out. It be a portable 78 rpm wind up. I've cleaned the drive mech so it purrs as it should. New needles (every record :-). Haven't done anything with the exterior, and don't plan too. Straight out of a trunk of my grandparents. Stand up Edison as well. 300 or so 78's to sort. The 1910's comedy ones are not PC.

Bunch of 33's and 45's as well. New belts/cartridges on the way for the newer turntables. Fun stuff!!

Love it.. I have one similar...went back through the "Leatherette"? and glossed up the ply veneer... did some leather inlay on the top ...Party favourite ... but the grandkids are scratching their heads?????

Try for some sapphire tips.. last longer if you can find them...

Around 20 years ago I was working for the Aussie Dual T/T distributor.. Whilst moving to new premises I was cleaning out a basement.... The find was around 30 new TT mechs from the 40's.. All packed in grease and after a soaking in WD40, as new.. Also found all new Nickel fittings, enough to build complete TT's.

I "snavelled" some up and went looking for antique cabinets, found some, & refitted them... Should have bought the lot...

Cheers

Thats funny ,when Ebay first started I wrote out a big list of all of the records I needed for my collection.I used to record them to 8-track then cassette ,when cassettes came out. But some a traded off ,sold, ect ect. It took about 5 years to do,but it got done. The last record was Dave Edmonds first solo lp /with" I hear you knockin',on it.I use the ION cd recording system to record the ones I can't find on cd.I play lp's once in awhile.V

My 17 and 19 year olds love my old records... my daughter and her friends have a turntable in their dorm room at college... they hit the used record stores and then have record parties in the room... I think it is great!

I've got an old rack system in the basement...

Not a Guru... just interested..

Yes! I still play, and purchase, vinyl! My main turntable is a Technic SL-Q2. I have a complete "vintage" system at my girlfriend's house, with a completely restored Dual 1219 turntable.

Drove down to San Diego a few days ago to see about repairing a BSR 810 turntable. For those of you not familiar with this model, let's just say it is the true Rube Goldberg of turntables! The owner, Fred, had been communicating with me via email and said he could bring it back to life. After he poked around with it for a few minutes, and gave me a lengthy, and somewhat boring, diatribe on BSR turntables, then said he couldn't repair it. Gee, thanks Fred!

Well, at least my girlfriend and I had a fun time in San Diego and a good dinner at Anthony's Fish Grotto LoLoLoLo
