I got my snare drum in the early 90's, about 93. I was 13 years old. It was Striker made in Germany. The following year I got a Made in Japan bass drum with pedal and mounted rack 10" tom plus a 12" concert tom and snare stand. I didn't get my first cymbal for another while and used a stainless steel serving tray as a ride cymbal. Later I got a pair of Sabian B8 Pro Hi Hats and a hi-hat stand so as you can imagine I was over the moon. Eventually I got a 16" Olympic Floor Tom and a cracked Paiste brass coloured crash cymbal. I used to muffle the kit with cotton wool and duct tape. I even taped the snare wires to the snare-side head because I couldn't stand how the toms would sound with the snares buzzing.

Nowadays I generally don't dampen my drums and I own some really sweet drums and cymbals, but I started out on a junk kit, much like the drum set from the Fat Albert cartoon. Ha ha! Good times.

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
