From longjohn

Just for the record... Measured mine again (Slingerland '77 hoops).. Measure 43mm which = 1 11/16".. and a Speed King is just a little too close to the head for my liking.. CheersJohn

Hummm...1 11/16 is actually a little bigger than 1 1/2". I wonder if my pedal will hit?

I guess I'm going to check in the morning.

I have 7 Slingerland bass drums. 5 have 1-1/2" hoops, the other 2 have 1-5/8". All the hoops are original to the drum they are on.

Thanks Gerald.

The two I picked up are an 8th shy of 1 1/2" Maybe they were sanded slightly over the years.

The inlay is 1/2" and they seem to be original. One side is beveled. Do you remember which side the bevel goes on? Is it the shell side or the claw side?

I'm going to put the hoops on and see if the pedal rubs, if not, I'll just keep these.

The "rounded" side goes to the outside.

I think I'm ok. I put the hoop on the batter side and put the pedal on and I have plenty of clearance.

Here's a picture of the hoop I received. It may be a tiny bit narrow, but I think it's acceptable.

Agree?

The T-Rods and Claws haven't arrived yet so its just sitting there.

My 2 Slingerland bass hoops are the same as Geralds. The older 40's bass has 1 1/2" hoops. And the 68 bass has 1 5/8" hoops. For Speed King pedals there was 2 styles of frames. Early WFL kept the pedal out more for narrow hoops. And then later Ludwig in for the wider 2" hoops they used. I know Ludwig did make some sort of adapter to space out the later pedal frame on narrower hoops. Here's a pic of the frames.

I'm not using a speed king, I have an older Yamaha pedal that I like and it seems to fit with no problem.

I'm one of those anal people and I want everything right. I'm more concerned about the bass drum looking out of place with narrow hoops, but I think they look ok (see pic above).

Those hoops look fine to me and they look like they were designed in this fashion.I`d say everything is cool with your hoops, but i know what you mean when you want things to look right to your eye.Hoops look great and pedal fits-perfect!

Thanks Wayne, but I'm a NUT JOB and these need work. They need new inlays, need to be repainted AND I think that they don't look right because they are a little narrow.

I've decided to send them back and find the right ones that are the right width and the right inlays.

I told you I'm a nut job! I'm spending so much time and money on these, it would always bother me if they weren't right.

Anyone wanna buy some 20" hoops???

The Speed King is the worst offender on narrow hoops, but there is a "makeshift" fix by gluing or taping a small shim on the pedal base. I have two SKs...one has the shim.
