I Did the Unthinkable Last viewed: 2 hours ago

I used a nice drill with the exact size drill bit and the holes were evenly placed. I put white out on the mount and pressed it on the kick, leaving two white circles. I did this several times to make sure the holes were even and then just drilled where the white circles were. It was actually pretty simple. The holes are clean and true with absolutely no damage to the exterior or interior of the shell.

Score! In my view, there is no harm done.

PS - Is that a 22, 13, 16 kit?

Ya, 13, 16, 22 with a pre-serial number Pioneer snare in a mahogany finish.

That duco finish and the sizes are very cool. You don't see that configuration very often with the duco finish. Must sound very good. Was there ever a rail or some other type of mounting system for the small tom?

Putting a rail on there would have to go top dead center and the cymbal mount is already there. Being a Clubdate makes it harder to determine a convenient location.

I was toying with the idea of adding a rail, but I'm not going that far.

There are no holes for a rail, but the 13" tom has a clip type plate, so it must have had an attachment like this one on the kick.

I only have one kit with the cymbal arm, other kits have the mount but no arm. I did try the one kit with a 22" ride but it looked unstable. So, how well does it function, anyone ever have that arm come loose while playing?

And by the way, I see no big deal in what you did, like some one else said, most bass drums have them anyway.

Thank you!

If the cymbal receiver and/or rail mount are installed to look "factory correct" there is no issue here. I would see this as being as insignificant as adding turn signals to a mid 20th century car that left the factory without that option having been installed. Many of the vintage drum sets that we own probably had the tom and cymbal mounts added by the dealers who originally sold the drums or by previous owners. How about all of you Ringo worshipers who have a Rogers tom mount on your Ludwig bass drum and mounted tom?

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.
