I Did the Unthinkable Last viewed: 0 seconds ago

I'm using a 22" ride, the cymbal would be too close and probably too heavy for that cymbal mount. I believe it's meant for a splash or cowbell.

I found a 22 sitting on a mount on the BD playing itself out of key as I kicked the BD. You may end up regretting that move but I hope it works for you.

I have a Ludwig wrench and I can tighten it up so it doesn't move at all.

Oh I didn`t mean that, I mean when I sat next to my friends kit with a 22 on a bd mount, the vibrations went right up the mount and pole and made the cymbal hummmmmmmm. Smaller cymbals don`t do it, it must be the mass.

You know as I look back at the catalog pages with pictures of that beautiful little vinty Club Date... It does break my heart that you stuck that non-period correct cymbal mount on it. I think it looks like a Mack truck hood ornament stuck on somebody’s little Ford Ranger. You should have come here and asked what would be the right mount to use to make it look correct. But that is just my opinion and it is not my drum. :(

I know it's not the era correct mount, those are difficult to find and look pretty flimsy.

The drum set looks terrific. You like it. I like it. If others don't like it......TOUGH for them. How many guitar and bass players have you played with who don't booger up the pickups, bridges, switches, frets, etc. in their instruments new, used, or vintage? Probably very few if any. Don't even get me started on what they do with their amplifiers.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

I have a '61 Galaxy 22" Club Date bass drum that is setup like your bass drum with the center cymbal mount only. You can use an old Z bar that fits in that mount and moves the ride cymbal over to the "usual" position. Mine also uses the hoop mounted clipper for the mounted tom. Here is a pic showing the tom setup. I don't have a pic of the Z bar. Gibraltar makes a modern version.https://www.ebay.com/itm/Gibraltar-SC-CA-Cymbal-Arm-For-Sc-Am-Mount-Gibraltar-ORIGINAL-Fast-Shipment/222781073967?epid=1800138451&hash=item33dec96a2f:g:ovcAAOSwPIhaTSahMike

If anyone wants one of those cymbal arms like listed in the eBay auction I have one sitting here on a shelf you can have for the cost of shipping .

Warning ... Avoid member statuscymbal here, vintage_collector on DFO , and americanpatriot10 on eBay. Email me for his name. All are the same shady guy who has burned me and a list of other members on both boards . He is also selling on Facebook too ..

I'm not convinced that mounting a Ludwig L-arm mount onto a Ludwig bass was "Unthinkable". Maybe a little "unsettling" perhaps, but not as horrific as some of the mods I made when drums weren't "vintage", they were just "old drums". I once drilled into a virgin Ludwig transition-badged 20" to mount an original Ludwig consolett. Now that's horrific and unthinkable! I still own it, and the only thing that stops me from cringing every time I look at it is I remind myself that, "hey, it's only a Ludwig. At least it wasn't a Rogers bass". ;)

I put a cymbal mount and a rail mount on a new kit recently. I just decided I wanted it to be the way I wanted it to be. I also put a Rogers mount on one of my "Ringo" sets. In that case the drum had already had the rail replaced by a MIJ double tom mount so I just added a few more extra holes. My other Ringo set had no extra holes so the rail remains undisturbed.

I've done it in an effort to better something myself. I try not to modify vintage drums or really any drums. But I took some tenor toms that were getting no use and made them into something that gave me plenty of use! Here is a sparkle kit I put together a while back. The bass drum was a 12"x17" Club Date style tenor tom. I added a period correct rail, wood hoops, t-tods and telescopic spurs. I used all era correct parts. The floor tom was a 12"x15" tenor tom. I added leg mounts to it. I decided to use the classic style mounts as opposed to the Club Date style. I've seen some original drums done like this before. I did however use Club Date straight legs as I prefer them. I compared these to other drums and did the best measurements and shell drilling that I could. It's one of my favorite kits. I did not add a cymbal mount to the 17". I normally play a 22" or 24" and just felt like that would be too much for a 17" bass drum shell.
