Interest in Vintage Drums Last viewed: 0 seconds ago

As a 22 year old kid who loves drums, drumming, and all things drumming related, I am in love with my vintage Ludwigs. The tuning range is great and I can get them right where I want them, maybe a tad ringy but nothing you can't manage with a moon gel or those slick baseball bat mufflers ;] the feel of it though? Incredible. There is just something special about it, when you take them apart and clean them back to life, tune them up, and rock out as you think of how many stories your 40+ year old kit has? Amazing.

I will say this though, most of my friends dig companies like C&C because its 'newer' and more 'custom' so theres that, but they still drool over my 60s Blue Sparkle ;] I'm not disrespecting C&C either, I like their work and I think its cool that they build a lot of vintage style kits! I think young guys just don't know enough about vintage or are too scared to play something so old, when in reality they are very durable!

IF I were to go modern and had the $$, the new Ludwig Mahogany Legacies are unreal...I think I'm going to get a snare from that line.

Just think, even if you stopped playing you could/should keep the drum/s and they would just emit this 'energy-vibe' about them.Mind Blowi as well as being such an interesting fascinating instrument to still have. That's what I'm thinking. I think the older the better as well .So much history to vintage drums. Unless,- hopefully not though, you're like me and worry that one day you literally couldn't pay rent or buy another car ( for gigging) and would have to sell stuff.

That's the same thing that happens to a lot of us as we are trying to live life we have obligations that sometimes are very pressing , and as most if we can only dream of living the American dream at one drum kit at a time that's good enough , collecting would be great I'd love to be the jay Leno of drums but , I've sold so many some with great profits and others with break even or a loss so I love my old drums but as a dad and husband I love my family first and drums must go to pay tuition life is grand LOL

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

I love Steve Smith, he makes everything look so effortless, and for a modern kit, that one sounded great. Thanks for sharing.

I'm not sure what Steve smith is trying to achieve here, ile probably get shot down but I've heard him a lot better, and is that the right way to advertise some vintage sound.

Yes he is, but they haven't set the scenario up very well around him. The sound of the snare is a bit empty to me, and the Bass Drum sounds a bit woolly, well on my speakers. Toms are quite nice but seem out of balance with the aforementioned. The second floor tom sounds like its from a different kit. If your gonna flog some drums, then you got to get the sound right.

I would like to add that that promo Peter Erskine did on that yellow Tama kit was similar after he moved over from DW. In that case the Toms sounded like doorbells! No tone, no meat, just Bing Bong Avon calling! lol
