A few thoughts, opinions, & observations.
1 - I always thought the whole Jasper shell thing was BS of sorts. If you call yourself a drum maker, you should make your own drums. Otherwise, call yourself a drum assembler. That was always off-putting to me as far as Gretsch is concerned. I don't oppose Gretsch as a result, but it's definitely lower on my priority list.
2 - I think the Gretsch sound was more about the hoops than the shells. I think the wood choice creates more subtle differences, whereas hardware/hoops are more noticeable. Put some COB hoops on a jasper shell and see how much the sound changes, or vice versa. The die cast hoops make tuning MUCH easier and consistent and I think they focus the sound a bit more and cut down some of the ring. COB is more wide open sounding.
3 - Fred Gretsch Jr. doesn't like to talk about Jasper shells, I think. He did a drum shop tour a couple of years ago where there was Q&A. I attended the local one here about a week after I purchased my drop G kit. Someone asked about the Jasper period. He made some comment about the history and that "someone always brings up the "J" word", then totally avoided the question. It was clear he didn't want to talk about it and he seemed kind of ****ed. I thought that was quite odd.
Disclaimer: I do think Gretsch kits sound great & never think less of someone who plays them. All my favorites play them. I just found a slight preference for Slingerland & WFL.
