I count -6-plies. Steve can correct me if I'm wrong, Camco used 4-ply Jasper Maple shells in the early Oaklawn era and 6-ply Jasper Maple shells in the late Oaklawn era. All 60's as far as I know, so early, late, doesn't matter, you got Oaklawn Camco's. The most desirable shells the company ever used. For $600 you stole them!

Too many great drums to list here!

The floor tom leg mount will not fit the two holes in the top of the bass drum, so we will just stick to the once a virgin scenario.

The plys look like five in places but six in others, so I think where I am counting five I am seeing two plys blended together.

Here are a few pics of what I have done so far. These drums were taken apart, lugs soaked in dish soap overnight then polished and re-installed. Shells were cleaned and polished using Novus 2.

See the holes in the 12" tom, are those from the original mount?

Thank you!

Looks smashing Jeff !!!

Counting plies indeed can be difficult at times. I’m almost certain these are 6-ply shells and that you’re counting 1 thick ply where in fact they’re 2 layers compressed.

The previous owner must have been a bit drill-happy. I’ve attached some pictures of the 2 tom mount systems which Camco used.

Maybe the previous owner decided to remove the cymbal arm bracket from the bass drum and mounted it to the 12” tom when he installed that funky looking tom mount system on the bass drum,... who knows ?

So with all the extra holes, still a good deal? Dont forget the snare and the cymbals/stands.

Thank you!

A killer deal Jeff, absolutely.

With your restoration skills they’re going to look super, no doubt about it.

Look at how these LA Camcos were totally molested by its previous owner. If you would decide to go for original hardware and you want to cover most of the extra holes, you might go for the triangle bass drum mount.

Thanks Stedi, could you do me favor and provide a rough dimension of that triangular plate please?

Thank you!

Almost look like holes for a factory muffler, but normally only one was installed and these appear to be a little low on the shell. Just a thought on what they might have been for.

That's exactly it. Twin tone controls. I never saw that before, very cool! They would look low as the Camco muffler works as a worm drive. I have a George Way snare where a novice decided to drill it for a Camco. Too high the first and second time. Luckily they didn't try for a third.

Now that I see the tom mount I have a better understanding of what mounting system your kit had. Instead of the usual triangle plate with post, your kit used a bass drum spur bracket as the mount. The post was also a smaller diameter. It incorporated the funkiest looking tom mounts you've ever seen just to be able to have an L arm mount on the tom similar to 60's/ 70's Ludwigs instead of the post thru the shell. Your bass drum could've still been a virgin using a double tom stand between two bass drums but that center hole looks factory to me. If that's the case there's a good chance it was never drilled for a plate. It could be that the plate was installed at an angle since it only uses two holes but I find that scenario unlikely.

That's just opinion, And it's coming from one who has never owned an L.A. era kit. Obviously John Ferraro and Jeramy Stacey don't subscribe to that opinion either...

I've owned two LA kits. Meh, not Jasper!

If I ever meet new to Camco people I alWAYs ask "Do you prefer Gretsch or Rogers drums?"

Gretsch I steer towards Oaklawns, Rogers I steer them towards LAs. There is definitely a difference and that part is personal preference.
