At this late a date on the Broadway timeline, my guess is that it's probably not a solid shell. Nonetheless, that's one beautiful drum you've got there. I'm very curious to hear more about that very unusual finish - has anyone on the forum seen it before?

Very nice snare!

Looks like a one off finish........

Could you imagine having a 24,13,16,18 kit to go along with that?

Wowsa!

Judging by what I've seen of solid shells (my friend has an old Radio King) I think my L&L is one of those. I can't see any plies other than the main shell and the reinforcement rings. I will take the top head off and take some pictures though for your perusal.......

That is a wonderful drum. I have a 5.5" like yours and a 6.5". Of the two, I prefer the 5.5, though both are super.

I suggest you do yourself a favor and do right by the drum by mounting an extended wire set. (see attached pic)

I used a 20 strand Pearl extended wire set, made for Pearl's free-floating snare. $7.99, w/free shipping @ Musicians Friend (see url)

In order to fit the gate, I removed one strand from each side for symmetry and ground the excess width from the ends with a grinding stone drill attachment.

Really quite easy, provided you have the tools, or access to them!

Thanks for the info . Initially when I bought the drum I got some Puresound vintage extended snares but they were just a bit too long to fit properly. So the Pearl snares are the proper length?

Right now I'm just using some Puresound regular snares and bypassing the rollers altogether and the drum sounds great but I'm still interested in checking out some extended snares.

Puresound extended sets are made for Radio Kings.. they're too long for L&Ls, and Leedy Broadways.

The Pearl extended set is the perfect length, as you can see in the pic, but, as mentioned previously, you will have to remove two strands for it to fit the width of the hoop gates. Ron

Cool. Thanks for that info. I'll try the Pearl snares.

Would you please do a sound evaluation test as to which ones sound better to you the extended or the standard snare wires?

I will. I'm a bit skeptical of the extended snares. I had a Tama snare once with those and there was always too much extraneous snare buzzing for my liking, even after adjusting the height of the rollers. But I'd like to check out the extended one nonetheless..
